I recently acquired a 4 inch Stainless Taurus 608 revolver. Man, all I can say is WOW. This thing is MASSIVE! It looks so badass too with the porting. As I was inspecting it, I noticed a few things..
1. Its a "4 inch" barrel, but as I looked in there, it looks like the rifling stops where the ported section starts. So is it really a 3 inch barrel with 1 inch of porting or is my logic flawed?
2. The trigger is NICE. I read that its a hand fitted action and trigger, and the single action pull is SOOOO short and SOOO light. In double action I swear I can feel the trigger "break". Am i crazy?

I am really happy with it. This is my first Taurus revolver, and even though I have heard/read bad things, the quality seems almost on par with S&W. In the pics below you can see it dwarfing my Smith and Wesson K frame model 15. I havent shot it yet but I plan to soon. Im guessing since it weighs so much AND its ported that recoil with 357 wont be bad at all. Anyway, I am happy with this revolver so far

Great looking revolver!!

Now for the range report. :) And no, the trigger can darn well be that good. I've got a older Taurus 65 that came with the light glass rod trigger break. Smooth and light.

Congratulations; these are great guns.

The M-608 is basically equal in size the the large "N-Frame" S&W revolvers.

It holds 8 rounds where historically N-frames held 6.

Nowadays you can get an 8 shot S&W M-627, but you'll pay a premium price.

My only regret is these revolvers weren't available in 1970 when I started my law enforcement career. ;)

The 608 is a fine revolver. I have a 6.5" version. Had it for 3 years. No problems at all. I think that you will enjoy this one!

Congrats.
Now a question or 2.
Porting? Is that to keep the weapon on target after the shot is fired?Does the porting not reduce the power behind the round, thus reducing the speed of the round and the distance it can travel? Would the porting also produce a muzzle/smoke flash coming out the top of the weapon obscuring the sight picture? DB here remember?

Slightly. But not enough to have an appreciable effect. I enjoy porting. Helps with recoil and muzzle climb. Just don't miss with the first shot at night. You wont get a second, you'll be blind. Fortunately you will have also blinded your attacker and deafened him as well, as the porting makes it sound like a snubbie.

I should also point out I don't OWN an 806 yet. I had a S&W a while back that was ported. I am actually looking for an 806 for a decent price that hasn't been mangled by someone hoping to polish it with steel wool. No really. Saw one. Guy couldn't understand why I wouldn't even make an offer for something that looked like it had been polished with 80 grit sandpaper. Poor gun.
