maverick 88 jammed up yesterday

So while shooting some clays, my buddy was shooting my maverick 88 pump gun. I don't know if he short stroked it or not, but the action jammed in the back position. There was an empty still under the extractor, but the action was stuck. There was one shell left in the mag tube as well. So I got the empty out of the extractor and the last shell out of the tube, but the action was still stuck. When I got home, I got the action to go back forward, and noticed the hinged door that covers the chamber was stuck. I could pump the action but it was tight and I noticed the door didn't move up and down. It appears that door being stuck might be the culprit. I haven't had time to dig around too much, but planned on looking up a total disassembly and try getting it apart laterthis evening.

Has this happened to anyone on a maverick or mossy, and know what might have caused it in order to avoid it again. Also any ideas on how to get it unstuck without disassembling the whole thing? Again, it is completely unloaded and the action is now forward. And I haven't got a pic yet.

Thanks in advance.

Was it an older model Maverick? The older ones had one racking arm as opposed to the newer ones that have two.

sometimes the feed hinge gets stuck after a lot of rounds fired through it. Powder residue, heat and dirt are all a factor. A general cleaning might be in order, but sometimes the hinge just break where you can't see unless you take it apart. These a very good serviceable shotguns but due to the nature of their manufacture will eventually break in certain areas after hard use. The aluminum receiver just doesn't last as long as a steel receiver like the rem 870. But they cost half as much as an 870 so it's a good trade off.

So iI finally got around to taking it apart last night. As I was, a small screw fell out. Then I saw something rattling around inside and figured that can't be good. Turns out, the extractor screw fell out and the extractor must have locked it up when it fell into the action. The screw got boogered up on the end, but the extractor looks ok. I will probably order a side saddle that replaces that screw anyway. So I took all the pieces and tossed them in my tank of Ed's Red to soak while I decide what to do.

By the way, would there be any harm in dropping the trigger into the Ed's Red to soak? I left out the acetone, its just kerosene, ATF and mineral spirits.

So I know this an old thread but I figure I'd post for anyone else who has this problem. The pump was stuck and I couldn't move it at all. Decided to take a hammer to it. Nothing. So I opened the gun up and tried to take it apart completely. The action was stuck. I grabbed a pry bar and hammer and smacked <edited - TTG> it until it finally moved enough to take it out. Finally I noticed that the ejector had fallen to the back of the receiver, making it impossible for the elevator to drop, hindering the bolt from go back. Turns out the ejector screw fell out. Have to go buy a new screw now.

I know a lot of people that have had good luck with their Maverick 88. A co-worker of mine bought one. We went to the range with it brand new in the box. 3 shots and it fell apart in his hands, pieces everywhere.

He immediately collected up what he could find and took it back to the gun store where he bought it. They of course did not believe him and reluctantly replaced it. Him and the shop owner took the replacement into the indoor range that have and loaded it up. 5 shots and it was coming apart. Got a refund and the shop owner apologized. Must have been a bad batch. After his experience I have had no desire to consider one.

I think it was about 20 years ago I bought a new Maverick 88 with the full length barrel. Worked fine, but it had a rough finish or coating on the inside of the barrel that was a little disconcerting. I sold it, but I'm not sure why - it was only like 150 bucks or something, new, so I only got 100 bucks for it used.

I hate to say it but this seems to be a specialty of the Maverick 88. Over the last 10 years that my buddy's and I have been doing a big turkey camp, we have had 2 guest hunters show up with fresh new 88s looking to bag their first tom. Both did the same thing you described at the patterning board the day before the season. Niether functioned much better than a single shot, the second one would not fire 2 consecutive shots without a malfunction.

I don't know if these things require a serious break in or some sort of "fluff and buff" to actually function as intended but I've never seen one that worked. I'm not saying it's a bad gun, there are lots of them on the market and I'm assuming most of them do work. I would contact Mossberg and see what they can do for you.
