GX4 issues right out of the box

Hello all,

I bought a GX4 last month and I took it to the range out of the box. Slap my hand, but I did not clean and lube prior. I did have jams right out of the bat and FTF. In retrospect, I attributed to limp wristing and not use to micro 9's.

Fast forward to yesterday... I did clean and lube prior to the range redo, I also tightened my grip to eliminate limp wristing. However, my issues remained. I did notice more jams and FTF with Sig Sauer 9mm ammo than the Blazer ammo. I was disheartened with my GX4. The most rounds I was able to get through with no issues was 40. Next time I go, I will run only Blazer, clean prior, and see what I notice since I will be alone next time I go the range. I had a buddy with me who brought his 2 year old, never fired EC9, never cleaned and it ran no issues. I also had my just bought Saturday Glock 17 Gen 3 and that ran 3 ammo types out of the box, with no issues.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I want to love this GX4, but.....

I noticed yesterday that I had loading into the chamber issues with the Taurus 11 +2 magazine. I can't really tell why its giving the issues, but I have no issues loading with what came with the Gx4. I should be going to the range again in the couple of days alone finally to see how it goes without shooting the extended mag. I bought the extended mag with the Gx4. Crossing fingers that is the issue.

Some suggestions, feel free to disregard what doesn’t apply:
1. Disassemble & clean the magazines. I’ve had some mags that were pretty gunky from the factory.
2. Number your mags on the floor plate - helps keep track of which one causes problems. I use dots, like dominoes. 3. Have someone else fire it - small polymer pistols are sometimes very technique sensitive.
4. Check the gun is lubed but the striker and sleeve are dry.
Best of luck!!

Have you figured out what the issue is?
Is the extractor not grabbing the casing, or the spent casing getting stuck in the barrel?
Four years ago I had a G2C that wouldn't fully return to battery. Here's what I wrote on this forum about it:

I got a new G2C in February of 2018. As I always do with a new gun, I cleaned and lubed it, and made sure everything was in working order. The first time I took the G2C to the range I had no problems; everything worked, no jams at all. I took it home and cleaned it up again. The second time to the range it started having problems. I let a friend who came to the range with me, and was new to handguns, try it out. After a couple magazines, the G2C started to jam. At first I thought my friend was limp-wristing it, so I shot it myself. Sure enough, it was jamming on me too.

On closer examination, I found that the slide was not fully "Returning to Battery"; meaning that it would eject the spent shell ok, but as it slid the next round into the chamber, the slide would stop about a quarter of an inch short of a full forward, fully closed, “seated” position. This prevented the gun from firing the next round. I could pop the slide forward by hitting the back of the slide with the palm of my hand and shoot the next round, but that's not a good remedy; and it is totally UNSAT for a carry weapon!!!

When I got it home, I broke it down again and gave it another thorough cleaning, and examination. I thought perhaps there was something wrong with the recoil spring, or maybe the slide guides were bent, but everything seemed ok. Then I closely compared the G2C with my slightly older PT-111 G2. The PT-111 G2 is an earlier version of the G2C and G2S. On comparison I noticed that the exterior of the barrel on the G2C was not quite as smooth as the G2. The G2 barrel seemed smooth and polished, whereas the G2C was a little rough and unfinished. It also appeared that the tolerance between the muzzle of the barrel and the slide was just a skosh too tight. I took some rubbing compound, and polished the outside of the barrel. I rubbed it down as best I could, especially near the front where the barrel flairs out and slips into the front of the slide. When I finished, it still wasn't as polished as the G2, but it was much smoother than it was before.

I lubed it again, and even put a little gun grease on the outside of the barrel where it flairs out. I took it to the range, and shot 200 rounds through it without a hitch. I've taken it to the range several more times, and haven't had a misfire since. Now my G2C is a dependable carry weapon.

These newer, smaller pistols have a bit of a learning curve when it comes to shooting them. The GX4 is an awesome pistol and I’m sure yours is either a lemon or it’s technique. A good “fluff and buff” may help. It’s an inexpensive pistol that may need a little bit more TLC in some places. So if you eliminate your technique, then you know it’s mechanical.

Don’t get soured on the brand. If it was a Glock or Sig doing this the fanboys would be all over you telling you it’s you and not the pistol. Yet both brands have had their share of bad pistols and ongoing upgrades and revisions.

‘Good luck and keep the forum updated. Curious on what happens.

I just returned from the range and I put in about 120 rounds without a jam or FTF with Blazer, Sig, and Reminington FMJ ammo with all three of my mags including the ext 13 mag. All is well right?Hold my beer, I decided to shoot one more clip and I got my first FTF and jams.

That was the most I shot my GX4 with no issues. Maybe it’s break in related? I estimate I have put in about 300 rounds. Some may say it’s getting better which I want to say, but too some it’s unacceptable. I’m not proficient enough to fix the gun myself.

Should I put in another 200 for more break in? Notify Taurus and take a chance that it takes several weeks to resolve or get a hold of a local gunsmith? Any help is appreciated.

I would experience FTF with my old PT145 SS when I got tired toward the end of the session. Lightweight poly pistols need a firm grip to cycle. I'd shoot it some more keeping that in mind.

The two posts above mine here are key. It just might simply need 400-500 rounds through it to "mesh" everything together, and let the parts work into each other. Plus, you could be getting better at handling the gun itself.

A lot of malfunctions with a slide gun DO come down to magazines, so do as said above with marking them, and see if it is magazine specific. If the problem continues, after you have done all that you can do on your end, then contact Taurus with the issue, and see where it goes from there. I know, it sucks, but that's about it.

I had to send one pistol back to Taurus a number of years ago, and they actually fixed it, and had it back to me in about 6 weeks...for Taurus, that's warp speed. Good luck, and keep us posted!

I am happy to say that after revising some basic skills from not firing in over 2 years up until Feb 2022 and not use to micro 9's that my issues were user related. I properly racked the slide and had no issues with loading into the chamber and NO jams in a little over 200 rounds. I was pulling what little hair I had left out and simulating what I would do at the range and discovered my technique was off. I was able to verify that earlier today. Needless to say, I have put in close to 500 rounds now and with the last 200 being with no issues after the change. I am now quite happy and will confidently carry my GX4!

I just purchased the GX4Xl and had the same exact thing happen. I also thought maybe it was just me but the guy at the gun store had some issues with it as well took it back there so that their gunsmith could look at it the next day. Now I have to wait until they fix it. I tried oiling it cleaning it doing all that and cycling three different types of ammunition a hollow points wouldn't even chamber, two different types of brass fmj as well. Really, I'm pretty bummed out

YEP! that was my conclusion some time back--out of 10 Taurus weapson 5 had to go back for repair, 2 went back twice!
the other 5 have always ran perfect!
and most were either 24/7's (3) or 1911's (4), so basically the same models/guns.

Getting a bit cooler here in Texas so my little LCP Max was put in the safe and I took the GX4 to the range this morning. 70 rounds of Federal 124 grain FMJ, then a couple of mags with various hollow points. What a great shooting handgun! I came home, cleaned it up, and now carried in a Crossbreed IWB holster.
Ready for the cooler weather now.

I carry the same weapon year round.
same ammo as well.
I might occasionally carry an old carry weapon but very seldom.
the CZ P-01 was carried for a few yersr ,never had a single malfunction out of it in 7000 plus rpounds, went to a smaller Sig 365 about a year or so back and so far it has been the same, although only about 1500 or so rounds through it so far.
my last three carry weapons were Beretta PX4SC, then the CZ P-01, now the Sig 365, all three have been quite good weapons.

I've taken my GX4 to the range once and experienced some FTF issues as well. I cannot recall which brand of 9mm though because I was using a few different brands with different grains (115 and 124). I was shooting it next to my Hellcat and my Hellcat didn't suffer any FTF so I doubt it was the ammo.
