It's a pt738
The PT378's had a weird numbering scheme that didn't fit the traditional serial number pattern. I'm guessing because they were made in the US, they used an alternate scheme so they didn't run afoul of the main plant.

Unfortunately Taurus took down their serial number lookup feature back when they moved from FL to GA, although I'm told customer service may still be able to give you some information.

ET is our resident expert, so hopefully he can come up with something.

In fact, this serial number scheme, like the one starting with "1D", does not appear in the manuals I have. I have already spoken to the author of the manuals, Dr. Domingos Tocchetto, about publishing an English version for the USA. He approved the idea and said it would include data on firearms that are not available in Brazil.

It's the new date code adopted from October, 2019.
Two first letters are the year, starting with AA in 2019. AD means 2022.

Third letter is the month (from A to L). J means October.
I have a G2c, s/n starting ABJ, so October, 2020 by this system. Problem is I bought it in September, 2020.

There is a birthmark on the muzzle end of the frame. It can be seen with the slide removed.

This one says April 2020 and coincides with the ABD serial number prefix on my G2C.

Hello Erik can you or someone else here help me identify my Taurus 357 magnum with serial #JB269997? My stepfather passed away sometime ago and was gifted to me.
