PT-111 G2 vs G2C

As I posted on the 700's forum a few days ago, Taurus recently replaced my 738 TCP with a G2C. I am very happy with that exchange since I had lost all confidence in my 738 (which I had already replaced with a Ruger LCP-II). I love my PT-111 G2, and the G2C seems like the same gun.

First thing I do is clean the G2C. It looks pretty dry, so a good lube is in order. As I start cleaning it with Hopps #9, I notice that the small rags and Q-tips I use are turning black. Jeez, this thing is Filthy! It took a lot more rags and Q-tips to clean this than I thought it would. Finally it's all clean and oiled, and I can compare it with my G2.

At first glance the G2 and the G2C look exactly the same, with only cosmetic differences. The bull emblem on the grip is a little different, and the newer gun has “G2C” in big letters on the right side of the slide. Looking a little closer I notice a few other differences.

  1. The G2C doesn't say PT-111 on the slide. In fact, it doesn't say PT-111 on the box, the order receipt, or anywhere in the manual. I thought they had completely eliminated using PT-111 on this gun, until I looked under the picatinney rail. There, just below the serial number, in white letters it says “Mod. PT111 G2 A”. A??? Where did “A” come from?
  2. The G2C does not have the “Taurus Security System” key lock. That surprised me. I never used the security lock on my G2 because I have a safe to keep my firearms. But if I didn't have a safe, that locking system would be nice to have.
  3. The outside of the barrel on the G2C seems rougher than on my G2. The inside is ok. I didn't notice the chatter-like boring that Frankieb01 wrote about in his “Beaver” thread last December. But the outside of my G2 barrel is polished, whereas the G2C is not.

Oh well, later this week I'm taking the G2C to the range. I hope I don't have any surprises there. Maybe this forum will have to start a new catagory, because I don't see the word "Millennium" anywhere on the G2C either.

That's why I liked buying the display gun. All the heavy cleaning had been done by the store staff.

The gun is still a PT111 G2 but Taurus wanted to break with the past so they changed the model name. however, they probably needed to maintain a link to the PT11 series--thus the "G2 A" designation.

I think that they didn't polish the outside of the barrel to have it more closely match the matte stainless slide version of the G2c.

I shot my G2c two weeks ago for the first time with nary a hiccup in 200 rounds. I think you should have the same experience.

I've been thinking that, too. I wonder if "PT111/Milennium/G2c/G2s" would be too long of a subforum title?
