Interarms Rossi Model Number Maze

I have been away from the forum for a while, but I worked my way back in. I just picked-up two Rossi 5-shot 38-special snubbies. One is an 88 and I had been familiar with that model....so I knew what it was. I also grabbed a 685. Is the 685 simply a blued version of the 88? Is it a model 68 without the shrouded ejector rod? I once had an M355, which was a 5-shot snub as well. Is there some definitive thread or source that can expand on Rossi model numbers. I prefer the older Interarms imports, which is why I picked-up the 88 and the 685. The two cost less than the price of one stainless S&W and the internals look about the same to me.

Wife is out of town with the best camera, so I will post a picture of the 685 I found off the net. The M88 is not in doubt....we know what that is. I am just trying to figure out any differences between the 685 and the 88. They feel the same and they look the same except for the finish. I had a 355 and it looked just like this 685. I have seen adds for 685 sales that had a shrouded ejector rod I have also seen adds for a "585" that looked just like this 685. I believe the 68 had a shrouded rod and the rod was smaller in diameter than the 88 family, so I don't think this is an off-shoot of the 68.

There is such an animal, but the gun price books have nothing about them which figures. There seems to be a number of Rossi model numbers of yesteryear, that seem to be quality pieces, that seem to have never be in the mass media or in print. Not that can be found easy.

Google seems to be the big yes it exists conformation source.

For those of us old enough to remember....it's like Abbot and Costello doing "who's on first" with the older Interarms Rossi small frame serial numbers. I am nowhere near any authority on the subject and I suppose if it goes bang and is a good solid piece....that's all that matters. I have always been fond of the little Rossi revolvers, but I got away from them for several years. Back in the mid-80's I bought a little stainless small-frame 22 and I let that gun get away from me. Don't remember the model number and I have been on an almost constant search for a while trying to find one. I have found several stainless 22's, but the ejector rod just doesn't look right. The one I had was built just like a Smith...the ejector rod locked into the front bolt latch and it had a 2-inch barrel. The ones I have been seeing have a "knob" (for lack of a better term) on the end of the ejector rod.

I SURE wish I could find another one of those little jewels. That was some time ago and I am certainly old enough to be imagining something that never existed. STILL LOOKING!
