The amount of time and practice that goes into this is almost unimaginable. Interesting story. When hurricane sandy came through. The Tomb of the unknown soldier was being guarded by a Marine the Marines was told they didn't have to stay during the hurricane. He refused, he stayed, he didn't abandon a post that hasn't been unmanned since 1948. Long story short. These guards take their job SERIOUS

That is not entirely true. The incoming guard would not have made it to the post had he not passed a grueling inspection within the guard barracks. But this ceremonial inspection is not merely for the benefit of the "tourists"- it is a solemn tradition to honor the memory of every unidentified soldier who has died for our country. The inspection, sun, rain or snow, is carried out at every posting of the guard whether or not there are "tourists" in observance.

It is a very impressive ceremony. I saw it twice when I visited DC.
Only problem with the rifle inspection is that it proves the rifle is unloaded.

When Netflix puts it out there again, "Arlington" is a great documentary about the cemetary itself, and what it takes to become one of these guards. It's not easy, I'll say that.

The entire Unknown Soldier ceremony, to me, is a terrific tip of the hat to every veteran who served since the Revolution.

I saw it when I was a kid. Hot summer day back in 77.
I love all that stuff in DC. Monuments and memorials. My favorite is the Vietnam War memorial.

Haven't been there to see the WW2 yet. I went last in 2002. I think they were building it then but had it blocked off.

Not to change the subject but there's a new Geico (I think) commercial about the Windsor? Guards at the capitol in London. the shift changes and the new guard shows up in his boxers boots, and that high hat on kinda crooked. The perfect guard leaves and the new one sits in a lawn chair instead of standing at attention. Pretty funny stuff.
