I put about 100 rounds through one yesterday with no problems, I do agree that the figure 8 sights suck though. gonna be figuring out how to change those ASAP. accuracy past 15 yrds is a little lacking but thats not too big of an issue as this thing is a compact SD weapon and it's probably more user error than anything

What are the options for a different sight for it?

FYI it is the PT 640 PRO (not the original PT 640) that Academy had for $289. I bought one Friday morning.

It has the polymer frame

Both original factory mags (it came with 2) are marked for the PT 640.

I tried it in my FOBUS SP11B holster that I use to carry my PT145 Millenium Pro, and it fits absolutely perfectly.

One difference not mentioned in the description of the PT640 PRO on the Brazilian Taurus website is that it has the licensed copy of the HEINIE "8" sights
instead of the three dot sites listed.

It also has the slide mounted lock, and came with 2 keys.

It has the SA/DA trigger, with the "second strike" capability.

It has the loaded chamber indicator that protrudes slightly on the right side of the slide, the same as the PT145 Millenium Pro.

Putting it side by side with my PT145 Millenium Pro it appears identical, other than the caliber (.40 vs .45), and the finish (blued vs my stainless PT145).

One of my shooting buddies has a PT140 Millenium Pro and I will compare the two, but I expect that they would be virtually identical.

When my POSSIBLY compatible magazines arrive from Cabela's (the factory original 24/7 Compact .40 11 round mags that are on sale 1/2 price),
I will post here whether or not they fit and function OK (Brazilian firearms blogs say that they are identical).

I will also see if my friend's PT140 mags work in the PT640 PRO.

Have you had a chance to shoot it yet? What do you think of the gun so far?

I took mine to the range today and put about 100 rounds through it without any problems. I am very happy with my purchase and think it is a great gun especially for the price. The Heine straight 8 sights aren't bad, just different. They take some getting used to. The first round I fired was from 3 yards and was dead center in a bulls eye about the size of a quarter. I have to say that is a great feeling when it is the first shot from a brand new gun. The other shots were also very good after getting used to the sights and I put a couple through the same size bulls eye at the 7 yard marker. I am very pleased with this gun and feel it is very accurate out of the box and has good grouping once you get used to the straight 8 sites.

Some of the Brazilian gun blogs as well as the Brazilian version of Wikipedia claim that the 24/7 .40 COMPACT magazines (11 rounds) are the same as the PT 640 mags.

I CANNOT verify that they work in the PT 640 PRO, but I did order 4 Taurus factory original 24/7 .40 COMPACT 11rd mags from CABELA's which has then on sale for 1/2 price for the next few days at $19.88

When they arrive next week I will test them and post the results here.

Replacement sights for the PT640

I just did a search for replacement sights for the PT 640 Pro that several of us purchased on "Black Friday" from Academy.

Here is what I found so far; they do NOT list the PT640, but they do list the Millenium Pro series which MAY be identical sight bases.

Williams Fire Sights
Pistol Fire Sight Sets by WILLIAMS Gun Sight Company, Inc.

Make SURE that you order the correct sights - the Millenium and PRO series have had both screwed-on and dovetail sights!

XS Big Dot, LaserLyte, and Trijicon do not list the dovetail mount sights for the Taurus Pro series.

That’s looking that up.
I did some reading up on the super 8 sight’s and I am going to give them a go and see how I can make out with them.
Reading up on them it seems people either loved them or hated them or did a mod to them by sanding down the front to the top part down to top of the 8.

I put about 50 rounds through it today. It was shooting a little off or should say I was shooting off.
My buddy tried it and it shot fine he gave me some pointers and I started doing better with it.
I should have bought a hundred pack. Fifty shots were going in no time at all.
He had a 40 cal glock with a 1” longer barrel the guns weight was exactly the same.

Me and my dad have already put about 60rds through our new 640 PRO, we adjusted the front sight abit, and I believe we are getting the hang of the straight 8 sights. We love the feel of the gun, no problems. Very pleased so far

Looking forward to hearing how it goes! If goes well, I will be ordering me a couple also.
Thanks for all the research sir! Ive done a ton and found a couple things you did, but not quite all the useful info. I, myself managed to convert some of the brazilian site to get a little info Ive been looking for.

Actually I reference the Brazil site on a regular basis because they have some info that others do not. They also have models no longer offered in the States or ones that it would be nice if Taurus did offer them.

It's very likely that the PT140 holster may work with the 640. It might be a bit tight, but trying is the only way to find out.

The 640 seems to have more in common with the PT140 than others.

On page 3 a member said his 640 pro fit perfectly in his Fobus holster for his pt145
