I have the 4" SS tracker in .45ACP. It's awesome! No go on rimmed ammo. Stellar clips are optional, though without the clips the extractor will not remove the shells but good old gravity will. It goes bang every time with or without using clips. It recoils harder than a 1911 (and is louder!) but the barrel ports keep muzzle flip reasonable. I find it to be very reliable, well made and just plain fun to plink with.

I liked the Trackers in 45 acp and bought both 4"and 6" barrel guns. Did not like the ported barrel on the 4" barrel gun and had it cut to 3" with a fiber firesite front sight. The 45 auto rim cases are too thick. The guns shoot tighter groups than my Smith 45 acp revolvers. I have enjoyed the guns. Have no clue what they weigh, I ordered a bunch of the full moon clips from Taurus when I got the guns and they also work in the Judge to shoot 45 acp rounds. Reloading with the full moon clips is faster than using a speed loader with my other revolvers.

 

I don't have a scale so I can't tell you the exact weight - the Taurus website says it weights 23.8 ounces :

I've heard it does not shoot 45 auto rim, that there is not enough headspace in the cylinder gap for them. Personally, if I wanted a rimmed revolver I wouldn't be looking at a 455. I think you can put the rounds in without the stellar clips, but then of course you have to dig them out individually or use a dowel. I've never understood the reluctance to use the moon clips, for me they are just as fast if not faster than a speedloader.

First, thanks to all who replied. Lots of good info. That 2" ia very interesting indeed. If it is 23.8 oz unloaded that would be near perfect.

Not recoil sensitive of the 45 in a lightweight revolver. Have two light S&Ws in 45 and they are fine.

I'm unclear if the 5 shot stellar clips are readily avavilable but if I could find a 455 with 10 clips or so that should be enough.

How do the star clips keep the rounds together?

I have always been away from purchasing guns whose ammo have to be loaded via star clips. The 45 acp revolver does open up my curiosity and I wish I bought a tracker back in time (4") that I saw at a local gun store.

My questions are:
1. How the star clips keep the rounds together when outside the revolver?
2. Is Taurus still offering the 45 acp tracker in 4 or 6" revolver barrels?

I hate to tell you this, but the 455 is out of production, so unless you have a line on a used one, they are hard to come by, at least local to me. That's why TTG loves showing his off-to make everyone else jealous The 445UL and 405 are your best options in current production. Charter is supposed to be offering a .45 ACP version of their CARR, but it will be in a new-for-them large frame.

 

Charter is building them on there "D" size frame..same as the 40 S&W revolver ...357 Mag. Pug and their ever so delicious ,44 Bulldog !

The 45 acp version will weigh right at 21oz.....and can fit in the pocket... especially with older wooden grips

 

All I can tell you about the moon clips is I carry 2 or 3 reloads in my front pocket when I'm conceal carrying my 455, and when I take them out the rounds are all still in the clips. I've once or twice had to bend a lip back to where it was flat, but I've never had a round come out. Reloading, like I said before, is as fast or maybe a hair faster than using a speedloader.

The 455's can be had in the used market. I bought mine at a gun shop - somebody had traded it in - and not a week later, I was in a pawn shop and saw another one, identical to mine. Just keep your eyes open, and you might even check Gunbroker from time to time.

 

Yes I knew the 455 is out of production. I saw two with 2" bar on gunbroker recently. One closed at $455.00 The other was at $350.00 with a reserve but I didn't check to see how that one ended.

I'm sure one will come along. I'm interested to see what charter's 45 acp CARR will be like size wize. I used to be a big 44 special fan but know I find the 45acp in a handy revolver suits my needs just fine.

44 special and 45 acp are both really good rounds. I shoot both in revolvers snub nose and 6" length. May draw the wrath of some that disagree but both do a great job on deer and other game within reasonable ranges and with good bullets. In the 45 acp and 44 special out of revolvers I like a cast semi wadcutter. Shoot 230 grain jhp in 45's a lot but the cast are just a fun load to shoot and hunt with. My Tracker with a 3" barrel loves the cast load and makes beautiful 45 caliber holes.

I hope so. Been wanting a SS Tracker 4" in .45acp for years now.

 

So someone has heard thru the "grapevine" "they", I assumme 455 with a 2" barrel will be introduced again soon. If they reintroduced the 445 Ultra Lite, why not the 455.

I have been looking but can't find anything recent on the 45acp Charter. The old info says it and the .40 would be made on the bulldog frame, the 9mm on the undercover frame.
