Okay, before we even get started, let's NOT go down the '22 is a bad choice for self defense' road...

Today, in THIS thread, let's say we're using a TX22 (any model) for self defense purposes, either for CCW or Home Defense. What's your choice of ammo you would use? I would normally automatically default to Stingers, but I understand they have a longer overall length and that might cause problems.

What say ye good people of TaurusArmed?

My TX Compact cycled Stingers, Federal Punch, and Winchester Silvertips with no issues today.

It was a quick test while I still had light.

I’d say a solid point bullet like Federal Auto Match, because I’d want penetration in a 22.

Lucky Gunner did a ballistic gel test on 22LR (before Federal Punch came out) and the CCI Velocitors did a pretty decent job - I have those in the ammo box just in case I need them.

CCI Stingers and Velocitors are probably the best for self defense. i would choose Velocitors as first choice. Stingers are rated at 1600 + feet per second, but they are 32 grain vs 40 grain for Velocitors.

From the independent tests I’ve seen the Punch has the best penetration. From my own experience it has the least recoil/muzzle rise when shooting rapid fire and is reliable. If I had to rely on .22 for SD it would be Punch.

I have a couple of mags already loaded with Federal Punch, with one in the gun.
