Thoughts on a Mossberg 590A1

I have a 48 hour hold on an 18.5" Mossberg 590A1 with ATI folding stock, that I found at my LGS this morning. I don't know how old it is, but it has a bead sight on the front of the barrel. It's worn and scratched, as though it's been behind the seat of a pickup truck or in the trunk of a car. Which is exactly what I would use it for, to have on hand in my vehicles for when I drive around town or travel the state of New Mexico and the southwest.

The barrel is clean and the action smooth. I like the folding ATI stock, it makes for a short package for storage and concealment when folded.

From what I've researched, the Mossy 590A1 seems to be one very tough cookie. The LGS has it priced at $359.99.

What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are, it's a really good looking shotgun. I've always preferred Mossberg and I'm not sure that I'd buy a Remington at the moment no matter what.....I love the foldaway stock that allows you to go pistol grip in about a second. And I think the finish is some kind of sateen stainless, but I'm going by memory so I'm not sure. If so, what's not to love?
I've not shopped them much, but that seems high for a used on with a worn finish to me..I don't know what the premium if for the stock, so that could make the difference though.

Did a little looking around just now. I'd say go for it.

Bud's has the gun for 530.

The stock was 70 bucks at Midway

Yeah, I did the same thing poking around at other sales. The popular ones now are 20" barrel 9 round shotguns.

What's the difference between the 500 and 590?

Looks like 590 is tactical with more rounds.

From what I've read, the 590 is geared toward military use. Where the 500 uses plastic, the 590 uses metal. The barrel wall is thicker. IIRC, the Marines still use the 590?

I think the military has replaced most of their 590's with berratta or Benelli semiautos. PSA recently had Maverick 88's with that stock for $199. I bought an 18.5" Maverick 88 last year for $199 from Dicks sporting goods. I was going to put a Butler Creek side folding stock on it ($40 CDNN) but ended up getting a collapsible so my wife can shoot it comfortably too.
I would love to have something like that for a truck gun, but I'm not sure where I would store it- Under the rear seats, I guess.

I don't see any rear window gun racks any more, and this is deep hunting gun country. Have they been outlawed? (The last gun rack I had in a pickup held a driver, a pitching wedge and a putter in case a golf match broke out...)

590a1 can't go wrong. Civilian model of mil. spec. Everything a little beefier but that means a bit heavier. The ATI top folding stock has decent reviews. Personally never been a fan of shooting pistol grip but for SD. Shouldn't be a problem. 360.00 seems like a good deal. It will outlast you and probably several generations.

Update: I stopped by my LGS after work today and looked at the Mossberg again. As I was handling it, another customer said that he used to have one exactly like it. I asked him to share his experience, and he said he sold it and wouldn't buy it again. He used it to qualify for a police tactical qualification, and the stock spar bruised his face so that it looked like he'd gone 10 rounds in a boxing ring. He also said it was very punishing on his shoulder.

I put it back in the sale rack.

Ok so go with regular stock. Better in my opinion. Get the gun for that price and replace that stock. You will still come out ahead and still have a nice weapon.

Personally the maverick 88 has given me everything I could ask for and has run like a raped ape. The cost of new stock. I am still ahead of the game and have a great shot gun that will out last me.

I'm in this camp also...for what you want it for you can get a Maverick with the Field/Tactical barrels to afford maximum flexibility and be around 220.00. I put a shock absorbing cushion on mine and am not pleased with the extended LOP...I am considering buying a Hogue stock for it.

I just put mag pull stock nice recoil pad and adjustable. I also dropped on MCARBO trigger spring kit and metal mag tube follower. Feels like a whole new gun.

I picked mine up in trade. You can find them cheaper used in armslist. Buy if you want new.

The extra barrel for 20 bucks was worth it for me as I'll probably use it more with the 28" barrel.
Oh didn't see extra barrel. Dam good price for that combo.

At that price, I'd rather get a 14" Mossberg 590 Shockwave as my CQW.
