Had to go for the re-up class again yesterday. In Texas, it's every 4 years. Well, that's changed, I found out. Now, if you've re-uped 3 times (I have), you go 5 years and you only have to take the class every 10. So, 5 years from now, I'll be 60 and I'll get the senior citizen's discount of 30 bucks to re-up, plus cost of pictures and finger prints. :D I can handle that!

Also, I got the exact penal code for injury of innocent bystanders. In Texas, you are criminally liable if someone is injured by your bullet, no matter the circumstances of the event. If you shoot through a wall and hit a neighbor, you will be cuffed and stuffed, don't matter that you were killing a BG before he could kill you. I took note of that because of all the arguments I've gotten into with guys who keep rifles in their apartments for self defense, AKs with FMJs and that. I've been told many times I'm full of it, there is no such liability if the shooting is justified, yadda, yadda. Well, now I have it marked in the book next time I get in such an argument I can quote verbatim, chapter/verse. :D I had looked for it on the net during a couple of such discussions, but it's a pain when you're just chatting on the net to find anything. I ain't gonna spend 30 minutes looking it up just to proved to some mall ninja the error of his ways.

Congrats on your renewal Native.

One question: They finger print you for your renewal? What's up with that? Seems like a waste of resources (like your finger prints are going to change with each renewal). It just sounds silly to me, so if I'm wrong, please educate me....

Submit new photos too, my looks never change, but some of these guys get older. And there are those who are quite good at phoney IDs.

This will be my 3rd re-newal. I'll be eligable this Fall as my current license expires in April of next yr. Do I still have to sit thru a class, or just range qualify, or what? I'm in Texas also.

I'm a Us Army Veteran, so I'll only have to pay 1/2 price. :D

I just took the CHL class but the application form provided didn't have the veteran's discount option. I added it myself and will send in the $70 money order reflecting the half-off discount.

My question is do we need to send in the DD214 copy or just what proof that we are an honorably discharged veteran? It seems likely they would be able to access a military database to verify the claim so maybe proof isn't necessary since you sign saying that all the information provided is correct.

Submitting proof isn't mentioned in the CHL updates from the state:

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/crime_records/chl/LegisChangesCHLStatute07.pdf

I found this contact info but with it being Thanksgiving eve I doubt the DPS office is open.

DPS helpline at 1-800-224-5744 or [email protected]

you can't go wrong with a copy of your DD214 sent in. I don't know if it is required but it definitely could not hurt. They were so picky on mine that they stalled me because my license copy was not in color...
