The weather was iffy - cool/windy with light sprinkles. But I had the time to do this review. So lets get to it! The Defender has a 13" rifled barrel and my concern about bird shot pattering was proven true. It was useless!
It is hard to see - the Rem express pattern was larger in width than this full size target at 10 yards and the Federal Judge 4 shot load had a foot spread at 10 yards.
So I moved up to 7 yards and tested a Federal 3" 6 shot load - it basically covered 2/3rds of this target.
Back to 15 yards to test Winchester Defender Judge ammo and Winchester super X 000 buckshot. I tried two shots of the Winchester Defender one at 15 and one at 10 yards. The discs did make decent patterns - but the 16 bb's went to another planet. However the 000 buckshot did very well.
I was so impressed with the Winchester Super X 000 buck shot that I decided to try it at 25 yards. While my POI was left of my aim the pattern was ok. This load is a keeper for this version of the Judge and could even be used for short distance small game hunting or home defense.
The larger target grip from our buddy in Bangkok Thailand is a must for controlling this revolver and cost $85. Now the laser, well even with the cloudy day it was pretty much useless outside. A warning if you present this up to shoot using the reflex sight hold onto that forearm with a vise grip, otherwise the recoil will whack your fingers into the back of the laser. Ouch and ouch - did it twice and now have a nice bone bruise on a finger. A better laser would be a slim laser or a vertical grip laser ( not sure if that is legal with this revolver ). Or only use this style of laser inside.
So what is this weapon good for? Well when using the 45 Colt ammo it is a very capable and accurate platform: See my other review: https://www.taurusarmed.net/threads...d.net/threads/taurus-home-defender-review-chapter-one-45lc.447835/#post-5920291.
Also using the Winchester super x 000 buckshot works for this revolver from close up to 25 yards with acceptable accuracy. So maybe a good home defense load out would be three cylinders of 45LC and two cylinders of buckshot. or visa versa. I am on the fence on if this is better than a normal barrel length Judge for close in work. Thanks for dropping by. More reviews to come: S&W M&P OR compact and OR 5" peanut butter. Sig TXG PRO LE and a Lionheart LH9 mark II, and a surprisingly great shooter from Tisas, the PX9( Gen3 Duty.
