Taurus big game rifles

This seems like a no brainer for Taurus since they are more into the civilian market. Make a good .308 and 30-06 bolt action cheaper than mossberg and you have a winner. So why doesn't Taurus do it?

I think the hunting rifle market if fairly saturated. Mossberg (for example) has tried a couple of times to get into it.

Now, if they'd upgrade their pump-rifle to handle the 44 mag, 454, 460 and/or the 500 then they might have something for the brush gun/short range stopping gun group. But once again, I don't know if there's enough market for it to be worth the effort.

Or they could begin importing the Puma lever guns that Rossi makes. They're already in 454 I think. I'm not 100% that they are made my Rossi but I do know that they are imported by someone else so they probably have the rights for a while.

If they made one in 500 S&W Magnum I'd be inclined to get it to complement my Raging Bull of the same caliber.

What i'd really like to see is someone make a bolt action in 7.62x39. That would be an excellent deer gun and the target ammo doesn't cost that much. The only ones i've seen were pricy customs jobs. If taurus would make one of those and keep it around $300 I would definetly get one.

Remington is making a bolt gun in 7.62x39 it is model 799 which is a modified mauser action. I am getting ready to order one for myself as soon as my reenlistment bonus hits the bank.

Yeah but have you seen the prices of remington rifles? I can buy a truckload of SKS's with what they charge. Hey if Mossberg can make a 30-06 for $244.00 why can't Taurus crank out a 7.62X39 for around $300?

Pump rifle in 357 Maximum would get my interest, same ammo as my contender, and higher velocity 2000 fps w/ 180 grain xtp would work well for deer to 200 yeards.

I'd like a 308 win over a 7.62x39 if a bolt gun. Make a bolt gun and offer it in the 3 military rounds, forget the rest, with those 3 (223, 7.62x39 * 308 win) you can do just about everything in North America and have cheap ammo.

H&R makes a decent single shot rifle in 500 S&W for $240 ,I think Taurus would be well served to get into this market

That sounds like a really neat rifle, but I already have a M7 Remington in .308 Winchester that I think is superior as a sporting rifle at least for the caliber even if it's not controlled round feeding. I'm not sure what the 7.62x39 would do that I can't get done with my .308, but it sounds fun to play with. I have a couple of SKSs I shoot occasionally. Surplus ammo is cheaper, though I handload for all my bolt guns. I've often thought the 7.62x39 could be a VERY accurate round in a decent bolt gun. The SKSs ain't exactly tack drivers, LOL!

Yes, a VERY saturated market. I don't know sales numbers, but between Savage and Remington, I bet there ain't a lot left of the market share. CZs and Tikka and such are getting some popularity and breaking into the market, but they have euro sales to fall back on. I'm happy with a couple of Remingtons and a Savage. I'm not sure how you're going to build a more accurate, decent quality gun for the money than the basic Savage 110 or Stevens 200 (a Savage product). Remingtons are smoother actions, better finished, but they don't shoot much, if any, better and they cost more, well, the 700s and such, not that new bargain Remington. I prefer the Savage to that gun, personally. The Savage design is what makes it so affordable and cheap to produce, less machining and precision fitting. The barrel nut eliminates machining of the barrel for head spacing and the bolt is mult-piece allowing for less machining/fitting. They work great, but cost less to produce. It's really sort of genious in a bargain gun and danged hard for anyone to top IMHO. How Savage ever got near bankruptcy I'll never know. They went throug a restructuring in the 80s and have not looked back. They really have a fine product for the money. And, as Savage arose from the ashes and started to take market share, Winchester went belly up. It's a fixed demand and if one finds a piece of the pie, it seems it comes out of someone else's slice.

If Taurus is going to seriously consider getting into the long-gun market, they may want to take a lesson or two from Beretta and Mossberg. Beretta bought Sako and increased their sales by plugging in Beretta's distribution network and re-branding a line of less-expensive Sako's: the Tikka and A7. Mossberg bought out Raptor who now makes their very good quality, accurate ATR's and 4x4's. At the same time Browning has introduced their BOSS system ... and I could go on-and-on .... A common trend is towards inexpensive, quality, and accuracy-out-of-the-box. Today's new gun buyer doesn't seem to want to make a hobby of tweaking his rifle, he /she want to take it out and shoot it! What a novel idea: Buy a rifle and take it out into the woods and shoot a deer ... who would want to do that when you can still get name brand rifles that you need to fuss over for months (what kind of ammo does it like, how is the stock bedded, need to go to the gun smith for a trigger job) before you can get it to hit a barn door.

Perhaps pistol manufacturers should follow their lead ... just a thought.

Chances are the would develop something for the tactical market before they would for civilians. Taurus does have the tactical site as well.

There's more chance for that and that's where the big money is.

Rossi could go big bore with the single shots.

Turkey builds all kinds of firearms for other gun companies as well. They seem to be solid items whether longarms or sidearms.

Most of the long gun makers seem to have been bought out or are already have been established and are big enough not to be bought out.

I think a 308 that used an AR-10 magazine would be terrific. That way, you could modify it or tacticool it in many different ways, and you wouldn't be limited on mag capacity.

Oh yeah! And how about adding a good bull barrel with 1/4" MOA accuracy? Sign me up!

Instead of adding products, Taurus needs to figure out what they do best and cut every other product from their line.

Then come back and add a few things. They can't keep up with replacement part needs as it is.

You hit the nail on the head! Anytime you want to increase sales, placing your efforts where you are currently most successful always provides the biggest and quickest payoff. Before you move on to other products, be the best at what you currently do ... Great Quality, at Great Prices built Taurus, and they need to never forget what has made them great.

BTW: I have fond memories of El Paso ... Standing by the window of my motel and watching half the red dust in Mexico blow across the river into Texas ... (I'm not talking about illegal aliens, but just plan old dust!). Other than "Hot and Dry" it is one of the nicest places to visit (mainly because of the local residents .. real friendly people)

I was in a little Ma & Pa gun shop many years ago, and the store owner handed me a Ruger all-weather rifle in 7.62X39!! I thought - what a great rifle this would make for my young son. The round is cheap, so he could practice a lot... It has almost the same ballistics as a 30-30...synthetic stock and stainless - so it wouldn't need the TLC as much as others. The asking price was about $310. I passed on it finally. OUCH!!! I found out several years later that it was a special run by Ruger ( they only made 1,000 ) and now they are highly sought after and go for close to a grand in good shape!!!
Just noticed now that Ruger is making the Hawkeye compact rifle in 7.62X39 and more expensive than the Remington!!
