Taurus 856 Stainless with new grips

I've had my Taurus 856 Stainless snubby for several years now and I've always liked it, but it never got as much use as it deserved because of one design flaw. The original rubber grips just pushed my somewhat large hands too far forward! My second finger knuckle was pushed against the bottom rear corner of the trigger guard, and all of the recoil impact was focused on that knuckle. After just a few shots it became downright painful, and caused me to develop a bad flinch.

I looked for replacement grips - the last set I tried were Hogue one-piece rubber grips, but other than being a bit longer, providing a place for my pinky finger, they really didn't help the knuckle situation. I reasoned that what I needed was new grips that added a bit of thickness BEHIND the rear grip strap so as to move my hand a bit rearward.

On Sunday I was poking around on the internet and ran across these:

They're made by Pachmayr out of rosewood, and they build up about 3/16" of wood behind the backstrap. Looked like just what I needed. Amazon has them in two versions - one smooth and the other with checkering. As you can see I picked the checkered version. So far they feel great, and position my knuckle about 1/8" clear of the trigger guard.

I think they will be just what I'm looking for.....and they look good too.

They are fantastic feeling grips, I've had them on both a 605 and 85. Looks great as well...

I want to find a set of Herrett Shooting Ace grips for a J frame round butt and try them on our 856. I have a square butt set on my wife's 3" S&W 31-1 and tried them on the 856. They could be made to work, but I don't want to mess with this pair.

Those rosewood grips look nice!
Those are very nice grips. Gives a whole new feel to the gun. This is my UL85 with those same type grips.

Love the looks of those grips. I so wanted some for my 638 when I got it, but in the end, I went with the standard rubber Pachmayr compacs like I've use for years. If it works don't fix it. Still what sweet looking grips, glad they are working for you.
Subbies rule ;)
After reading this review, I ordered the same ones from Amazon this afternoon. I to have large hands
and the small rubber ones just were not making it. I hope they solve the problem. They sure look great.
This is what I have been looking for the Wifes Taurus 942 ,3 inch 22 lr. TY and Congrats !
Pachmayr makes some really swell grips, that's for sure. I especially appreciate how colorful they come as well.

Classy man!!! That's what I need for some of my snubs. Those look great.

I received the new grips today and have them installed. Damn they look great.
Can't wait to shoot it. They really fit my hand a lot better than the factory ones.

How are these in the length department? Any longer than factory?
I had the Pachmayers on my 856 but I moved them to my 605 and I think I like them better on the 605. I put the defender grips on the 856

Good choice to switch. The 2" is easier to fit in a pocket with those grips and the larger grips balance out the 3" better.

The Pachmayers make a huge difference on the 605, the walnut grip looked better on it but that was about it.
I always pocket carry, the walnut grip is better for that than the Pachmayer but it is a little pointy on the bottom, if it were rounded it would be perfect.
Overall I'm happy with the way they function

I may play around with is set of J frame square butt Shooting Ace grips. It leaves a small gap at the bottom and I would drill a small hole part way into the grip for a roll pin if they were going to remain. Great feel though. I just don't want to rob them off my wife's S&W for long.

I added a Tyler T-grip adapter from a K frame. I have XL hands and it fills them but my pinky has to get tucked under the grip. It puts my trigger finger lower on the trigger though. Fun experimenting.

I went through a lot of grips for my LCR, including the Pachmayr. Later read a article by Pocket Guns and gear and he mentioned how he loved the grips below. I was hesitant and really did no think I would like them but bought them anyway and never looked back. (Bantam grips)

PS I have a size large hand and wear a xtra lg glove.

Congrats to the OP, that 856 looks great, need to get one.

I've read the above posts about Pachmayr grips. I've tried several models of various grips and I'm not satisfied with them on my 605. I'm hoping the Pachmayrs helps some with recoil. I'm not expecting the grips to Tame recoil, just help some. Ordered the from Amazon.
