I understand the proper method for removing it is to take out the screw(s) and tap lightly with mallet or plastic tool. Correct?

Any ramifications for doing so? Will any parts, springs, etc. fall out or come apart?

If this is a really bad idea, any thoughts on spraying Breakfree CLP into the works from trigger/hammer and other openings to clean.

I don't take the sideplate off. I spray Breakcleaner down the hamer slot and up from the trigger. I then let it dry and lubricate. I have done this for years after shooting and it works just fine. When I have taken the Sideplate off ,just to see how clean I got it, it looks perfect.
