0315 RIFLE BANNER.jpg

 It's MARCH!!!! Spring is upon us and the clock is in our favor once again!

Time to break out and shoot some rifles! :shooter:

We will keep the same rules as last month — NO RULES!!! :icon_ nono:

Shoot as many targets as you like, as many shots as you like. There are some standards IF you want to try to be in a match up. 5 shots at 25 & 50 yards and 3 shots at 100 yds. That is only a suggestion - it is NOT a rule!!

Special challenges are always welcome - have an idea or a grudge match - post it up!!

It's not a rule - just a fact - a hole in a target is going to count! 6 holes is 6 holes - there are NO throw aways!

Iron sights, red dots, scopes, 22LR, 12 gauge slug, military C&R, ARs, Hunting rifles, sniper rifles, bolt action, lever action, 1 shot, 10 shots, mag dumps, timer challenges, dream it up and let's do it!

NOTE: Due to the extended 5 weeks shootout last month MARCH will run through Sunday April 5 (midnight) to get back on 'schedule'.

Well I got to send GWK back out to the range!----------

Heres the new so called Remington Copperhead (blems) 55 gran BTFMJ that are all copper
actually they printed dead on with the federal American Eagle 55 grainer, which surprised me.
this was at 25 yards, farther out they might begin to differ?
anyway not to bad of a day, a vicious cross wind was blowing from the ventilation system and the range lights were in my eye (one of my eyes has pink eye so i can't see out of it anyway), and then I began to get a sunburn from them, under these circumstances I thought it was pretty good.

An interesting story here, as we often hear about the man behind the trigger instead of the gun so much, and certainly I am not saying that I am a sniper, long way from that.
There were 3 other guys shooting Ar's when I got there.
One had a Bushmaster in 308,another a S &W 556, the other a Colt 556.
everything except the kitchen sink on the things, one had 4 different types of signts on it set up with a quad rail, all were scoped of one manor another,2 had bi-pods, even had vertical fore handles, camo fore ends and stocks I thought man these guys are serious!
I kept my composure but I swear the best group of the bunch had to be 6 inches at 25 yards and off a bench.
they were just raving about the accuracy of the Bushmaster.
not talking bad bout them but this Is a prime example of more gun than Gunner.
good guys though friendly and we talked quite a bit.

WOW! Casper's barrel was not completely tight, slight wiggle in it.
[LAST NIGHT]
Well, as you may recall, the floating handguard was off-center and touching the barrel.
I had milled it out, but it still was off-center.
So I disassembled ("No disassemble Number 5!")* the gas block and tube and looked to see what was wrong.
The barrel actually had a slight rotation of a fraction of a degree, it wasn't completely tight with the barrel nut.
As near as I can figure, I really needed a shim washer (maybe .001"), but no way to do that.
So I did some grinding on the handguard where it meets the upper, some grinding on the upper at the rail, and some filing on the the handguard ring.
I also noticed that the gas block was not vertical to the upper, it was angled a couple degrees.
OK.
I made sure the barrel was snug and did not twist.
Then I used a wrench and adjusted the gas block tube hole to be vertical with the upper rail.
Then I had to use a 9/64" drill bit to clean the pin holes and the barrel grooves.
I repeated that several times until the gas block remained vertical.
Vised it up and re-pinned the gas block.
OK.
Another problem.
Gas tube is in, but barrel nut not completely tight, slight mismatch with the holes to the upper.
It won't go to the next hole, so I just used the Armorer's tool and snugged it to the gas tube already through the nut.
It only took a fraction of a turn to tight it all up.
Barrel no longer twists, gas block vertical, handguard mates to upper rail perfectly (after several tries of grinding to fit), had to sand the lower front takedown mounts a little to fit.
Anyway, after 2 hours of putzing with it, the barrel is now perfectly centered in the front dust cover of the handguard, and nothing moves!

More shooting in the morning to get it all checked out and the scope zeroed.

[THIS MORNING]
And the scope was way the heck off!
First 2 shots 11" low and 6" left.
Took 10 shots to get back on center.
So a target for today after all that crap.
Casper. bench with front support, 10X, 50 yards, 55gr. SHFT ammo (And I don't expect Match performance from it)

EDIT: Also have a nasty wind from left to right at around 15-20MPH.

All groups are 50 yards. Target 4 is a 10 shot group. All others are 5 shot groups. All groups shot with Mossberg MVP Varmint 5.56/.223. Center Point 4-16x40 scope.

Load data is as follows: LC Brass; Win SR Primers; IMR 8208 XBR; Large GO-rilla bag; 55 gr Hornady PSP.

Target 1: 23.0 gr
Target 2: 24.0 gr
Target 3: 24.0 gr
Target 4: 24.5 gr
Target 5: 24.9 gr

I think I can do better:

T-1: .778"
T-2: .327"

WOW - did you have to set zero as you added powder? 1.9gr is not a huge spread % in total I guess.

Looks like #2 is the 5 shot winner here at .769" total and the 10 shot is at 1.673"

Nice work!!!
