WOW! Casper's barrel was not completely tight, slight wiggle in it.
[LAST NIGHT]
Well, as you may recall, the floating handguard was off-center and touching the barrel.
I had milled it out, but it still was off-center.
So I disassembled ("
No disassemble Number 5!")* the gas block and tube and looked to see what was wrong.
The barrel actually had a slight rotation of a fraction of a degree, it wasn't completely tight with the barrel nut.
As near as I can figure, I really needed a shim washer (maybe .001"), but no way to do that.
So I did some grinding on the handguard where it meets the upper, some grinding on the upper at the rail, and some filing on the the handguard ring.
I also noticed that the gas block was not vertical to the upper, it was angled a couple degrees.
OK.
I made sure the barrel was snug and did not twist.
Then I used a wrench and adjusted the gas block tube hole to be vertical with the upper rail.
Then I had to use a 9/64" drill bit to clean the pin holes and the barrel grooves.
I repeated that several times until the gas block remained vertical.
Vised it up and re-pinned the gas block.
OK.
Another problem.
Gas tube is in, but barrel nut not completely tight, slight mismatch with the holes to the upper.
It won't go to the next hole, so I just used the Armorer's tool and snugged it to the gas tube already through the nut.
It only took a fraction of a turn to tight it all up.
Barrel no longer twists, gas block vertical, handguard mates to upper rail perfectly (after several tries of grinding to fit), had to sand the lower front takedown mounts a little to fit.
Anyway, after 2 hours of putzing with it, the barrel is now perfectly centered in the front dust cover of the handguard, and nothing moves!
More shooting in the morning to get it all checked out and the scope zeroed.
[THIS MORNING]
And the scope was way the heck off!
First 2 shots 11" low and 6" left.
Took 10 shots to get back on center.
So a target for today after all that crap.
Casper. bench with front support, 10X, 50 yards, 55gr. SHFT ammo (And I don't expect Match performance from it)
EDIT: Also have a nasty wind from left to right at around 15-20MPH.
