According to police, the streets in Oil City are “nearly impassable” as of 7:45 a.m. on Friday.
Multiple motor vehicle accidents have been reported throughout City of Oil City, and police and emergency personnel are working to clear the scenes.
The Oil City Police Department are asking the public to avoid travel in the area, if possible.

I always loved the idiots that think "Hey, I have 4WD, I can go anywhere". And then realize that "Hey, I can't stop on a dime". Coming to Texas from living most of my life up north in the winter weather I was quick to learn it was simply better to stay home then to get in the mix of those less qualified to face challenges of Mother Nature.

I now agree with TheOldRedneck, stay in and enjoy that extra cup of coffee. I usually follow up with a nap.

They likely wouldn't but would still have to be better at it than most of these locals. There was a medium truck, a li'l straight job, layin' on its side at the end of a gas station parking lot just down the road...:scratchchin:...still tryin' to figure how he pulled that off. Of course, while I was stationed at NAS Norfolk, I saw a car on its roof in the McDonald's drive-thru on base, one sunny, summer afternoon...:dunno:...so I suppose anything can be done if ya' work at it hard enough.

Usually the first slippery snow of the season turns the roads into Demolition Derby events. People go way to fast for conditions and run into those who are Freaked Out and doing 20mph... Fun to watch... I used to live within sight distance of a major intersection on US31 in West Michigan... We could sit in our living room and watch the chaos take place!!

I can think of twice when I drove in the snow and once in an ice storm in my 4x4 toyota. Saved the best for last, at 10,000 feet in the White mountains of Arizona on a motorcycle. Ever heard of the Coronado trail? THAT one was enough for two lifetimes, but it sure was pretty.

It's cold today, no snow, yet I've gotten out of the house once to retrieve a part from the truck. Slept most of the afternoon. life is good.

I was one of those 4WD drivers when we lived in New England- mostly CJ-5's but and CJ-7- but at least I realized that all cars had 4 wheel brakes, and that I could "go" better than most, but only "stop" just like them.

Our little borough here has it's own Public Works employees who also run the snow plows. Around 7:45 this morning I spied one of their trucks coming down the totally clear road, snow plow in the ready position with lights flashing. I imagined the cartoon bubble over his head which read "can I drop the salt now chief, can I please can I"?

Now i had fun up in Indiana driving in the snow and black ice a few years ago. I didn't have snow tires on my taco 4x4 but my BFG KO's did a good job.
I drove up I-65 in an ice storm. I got just the other side of Elizabethtown KY before it got bad. I started getting sideways and just tuned the knob to 4 wheel high. My radio antenna got really big with ice. I had never seen that before. I would turn off the 4 wheel drive and slide around a little just to see how bad it can be if you don't have it. All wheel drive cars i have not driven in ice and snow.

I had to teach them in AL. They say 'you northerners don't get ice like we get ice' . I asked them to explain how the solid liquid form of their water differs south of the Mason Dixon but they couldn't explain it to me.Well we do have tires on our cars and to some degree the DOT know about salt but you need to think a bit. Pick the correct way home, do everything slowly, get a run at it, 4WD helps you go but doesn't help you stop or turn, the berm is your friend...

I love the guy that thinks his tires can melt thru the ice if he spins them fast enough.

But yes, it seems some Northerners learn anew every year ... or maybe the fools never have learned. What did PT Barnum say?

That's what I was going to say...they get better with some practice as a refresher. For many years I would switch between a '92 Miata and a '91 Eagle Talon TSI AWD. One morning I left for work in the "summer" car and there was about a 1/2" on the roads. I turned around after 4 miles and swapped them out.

Flew into Jacksonville, FL just before Christmas 1989. Last flight they allowed to land.

Got off the plane (luggage 'lost', of course), rented a car (just before the manager called to stop car rentals), headed for Orange Park (just south of J-ville). Driving experience gained from growing up in Missouri came in handy.

No big pile-ups, but plenty of people who'd pass us, then be off the road or turned turtle somewhere up ahead. Usually just on the other side of an overpass or bridge (duh).

Had no problems -- just have to drive 'softly'. No sudden actions, think WAY ahead, think 'steer out of trouble' as much as 'stop out of trouble'.

Next morning took the truck and the kids to the local WalMart parking lot for a little slip and slide driver's ed, then hot chocolate in a mall parking lot overlooking a major intersection. Fun times.

My worst experience was about 2010. We had just bought our new home in Arkansas and were transferring belongings from St. Paul in a 14 foot box trailer pulled behind a 95 Dodge 15 passenger van I had converted for camping. We ran in to snow and wind at the Iowa border ... wasn't too bad, but starting to glaze the road. Slowed WAY down (35-40 mph) and started counting slide-offs. Didn't see any wrecks, but counted 134 slide-offs from north to south in Iowa. That van was about as stable as you could ask for having so much weight on the hitch. Wind was a little trouble.
I think the need for southern drivers rises from the fact that so many GOOD northern drivers have retired from the snow belt.

The reason southern drivers learn to drive on ice and snow is working up north and places that have snow and ice. Those of us that had to work in these areas didnt have a choice. Friend said he learned when escaping back to the south if he didnt leave early enough when winter hit. Driving on it in the south is worse than in the north. Here if snow is forecast the idiots draw a 10 ft circle if anyone thinks a snow flake falls in it demolition derby day is declared and they all rev up their engines and run over everything in sight. There will be the traditional grocery run for bread and milk. No one knows why but if snow is forecast everyone must go get bread and milk. I assume it gives everyone their shot at running over or being run over by an idiot. Driving in snow and ice is much safer up north.

I didn't know that any of the old Beetles had working heaters. At least not working enough to keep the occupants warm. I know that in my VW Thing I froze during the winter. The production year before mine did have a gas operated heat system of some sorts.
