Nope. It was a pork butt for pulled pork and smoked Bourbon Mac and Cheese with Gouda and Gruyere. Delicious would be an understatement. Tonight we tried something different. Smoked cheeseburgers with mesquite. Fatal mistake is now this is how the wife ALWAYS wants them.

Getting closer. 1st is the rough shaped then the same set after a quick dip in water to see the richness. The perceived misshaping on the right side is due to it not being a flat piece of paper. It's a visual aberration..

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Initially that was wood I was going to chip up for the smoker then I saw the black squiggly lines in the end cut and decided to slab it. It does also have some flame pattern to it as well. In terms of grips, they were probably the worst ones as far as shape but they look the best by a long shot. I was fighting that wood the entire way.
this was one small piece of wood that was probably 4-5" in diameter and about 6" long. I have roughly 1000 board feet of the stuff left including several 3" thick slabs of the trunk that's drying and aging.

Those are beautiful!

How do they look installed?
Not too shabby. Just tried them on. Need to make a couple of small adjustments.

Wow. Those look almost too good to be real.
I assure you they're quite real and they look much better shape-wise in the photos than they do in real life. If you look at them in the sunlight, you can see all sorts of flaws with them regardless of them looking like a high end burl wood. I did start to rough out another set but the wood itself feels somewhat punky so I may need to use a wood stabilizer on them.

Most of the wood I'm using for grips were from 2 Bradford Pears that we took down and the spalting came from letting the limbs sit on the ground for a couple of years. I do think I'll have to remake my templates out of steel as I'm really wearing out my wood and cardboard ones pretty fast.

And what does the chunk of remaining wood reveal? (Metal template added for scale.)
