Taurus Armed Rifle Shootout - May 2013

Ammo saving version with a new challenge!
All categories are 3 shots per target for April.
Plus, Rimfires and Centerfires compete against each other!

Pick up to 7 regular categories and/or the Challenge category in which to submit an entry!
One target entry per category per shooter. You may choose to shoot a rimfire or centerfire per each category, but you cannot enter a target from both a rimfire and centerfire per each category. You must choose only one target to enter in each category regardless of how many rifle types you shoot.

_________________________________________________________________________________

Challenge for May 2013 - bench rested* on fore end only or bipod (no mechanical rests**)
Rimfire or Centerfire rifle - 50 yards - 1 shot each at 3 separate 1" target dots - (magnified optics 1.5x and above)
On one piece of target paper, draw three 1" dots horizontally at least 2" apart from one another. Circle shaped target pasters can be used in place of drawing if you have them as long as they are 1" in diameter.

Shoot one shot at each of the three dots. Using the center of the bullet hole, measure to the center of each dot. Write that measurement by each dot, then add all three measurements together. The added measurement will be your score. If a score is tied, the person with the most shots entirely within the 1" dot will win a tie. No flyers discounted from targets, only 3 shots total per group of 3 dots.
_____________________________________________________________________________________

The remaining categories use the rules listed below this list, just like last month. :)

Standing Offhand Categories - may use sling
1. Rimfire or Centerfire rifle - 25 yards - 3 shots - (iron sights or non-magnified red dot sights)
2. Rimfire or Centerfire - 50 yards -3 shots - (iron sights or non-magnified red dot sights)
3. Rimfire or Centerfire - 50 yards -3 shots - (magnified optics 1.5x and above)

Bench Rest Categories - bench rested* on fore end only or bipod (no mechanical rests**)
4. Rimfire or Centerfire rifle - 50 yards - 3 shots - (iron sights or non-magnified red dot sights)
5. Rimfire or Centerfire rifle - 50 yards - 3 shots - (magnified optics 1.5x and above)
6. Rimfire or Centerfire rifle - 100 yards - 3 shots - (iron sights or non-magnified red dot sights)
7. Rimfire or Centerfire rifle - 100 yards - 3 shots - (magnified optics 1.5x and above)

Target ~ Any target the shooter chooses whether handmade, printed from computer, purchased at store, or purchased at shooting range

Shots per target ~ 3 shots 25 yards, 50 yards, and 100 yards. No flyers to be removed from groups fired.

Scoring ~ Group size in inches + farthest shot from center of target in inches = Scoring Measurement
Example: a 1.250" group with farthest shot 2.410" from the center of the target gives a scoring measurement of 3.660".
- Smallest Scoring Measurement wins the category entered. All measurements are made center-to-center.
- If there is a tie in the Scoring Measurement between entries, the entry with the closest farthest shot from center is the 1st tie breaker.
- If another tie breaker is needed, then the smallest group size is the 2nd tie breaker.

Number of entries ~ One target entry per category per shooter. Pick a rimfire target or a centerfire target for a category, but not both.

Each entry requires a photo of the target posted by the shooter with measurements marked on target using ruler/calipers or with target software. Each entry also requires the mention of the Make, Model, and Caliber of the rifle. If optics are used, please include a description of that, too. A photo of the rifle used in the entry would be helpful as well. As with all internet shooting competitions, this is an honor system event.

* Fore end of rifle may be rested on sand bags, rubber, carpet, wood, etc. or shooter's hand/forearm/elbow. Rear of the rifle must not be supported by anything other than the shooter's free hand and/or shoulder. No rear sand bags or rests allowed.
** A mechanical rest is any rest that uses a screw thread or other mechanical device to adjust level, elevation, or windage.

___________________________________________

The last date for a target submission is after dark on the last day of May 2013. Any targets posted a bit late due to time zone differences will be allowed to enter. I will do my best to have all entries compiled by the end of June 2, 2013. :angel:

Gwk - I'm pretty sure I'm throwing more ammo and targets at this than you - eventually (as you know) one hits home. I've been lucky with my supply lines and did re-shoot the lost 1" x3 targets that I'll post tomorrow. :)

You've got the scope for it! I laid them out 3-up per page.

The new place I'm shooting is great - I can put up as many targets as I want, shoot in a shared range or have a 'combat bay' all to myself - no cease fires, no 3 second rule on shots...

It's about 25 miles door-to-door (95% I-55) but there is a great BBQ joint at the exit a local sporting good store that has had a good supply of primers and powders recently and some bullets.

I found the image that I used on the net then sized it to an inch and formatted it in Photoshop. I didn't want to be guessing where the center was. With digital calipers it was easy.

I shot the one that I lost with 223 and switched to 22 the second time and had a couple of typical 22 flyers after picking the center out of the first 2. I had a few that the totals were REALLY close - a few thousands difference.

It's a fun one!

Had a break in the rain this morning, tried 12 rounds.
Forget it, rimfire ammo is too inconsistent.
Out of 12 shots, only 2 hit the dot, the rest are all over the place.
I'm lucky if the bullets hit within 2" of POA.
I need a centerfire rifle.

Here's the proof it's the darned ammo and not the rifle or me.
My $250 Rifle Rest, rifle strapped and locked in place, rifle leveled.
Scope at 10X, target at 50 yards, 10 rounds Federal AutoMatch 36gr LRN.
Scope checked after each shot to verify still on dead center of target.

2.2" group at 50 yds from a vise is remarkably big. I see 10 holes. Did 2 fly even farther? Still, if that's 2.2" I see 9 that would be in or touch a 1" circle, no?!

The center circle is 1 MOA @ 50 yards, or .5235" in diameter.
The other circles are 2, 4, 6 and 8 MOA (4.188" outer ring)
I used that same rig with my 30-06 a couple years ago to zero the $300 Nikon scope and put 3 shots inside 1" at 100 yards.
Bench rested I could do 2" at 100 yards.

Here's my little contribution for May 2013. It will be the last time I can use stickers or mark on a target at the range I was at today. I snuck in 3 of the challenge targets before the range master told me it wasn't allowed. Oh well. :(

Anyway, today I took out my ol' Marlin 39AS I bought new about 20 years ago. In all that time, I have never scoped it. So, I stuck on an airgun scope that I had laying around. I also had a cheek riser from another rifle project that I strapped on. I truly couldn't shoot it much better than with the Williams peep sight I have for it, but I knew I wouldn't be able to make out the 1" stickers from 50 yards with my peep sight. ;)

3 Dot Challenge - Score 1.800"
Rifle = Marlin 39AS .22LR
Optics = Centerpoint 4x32

#5 - score 1.930" / far shot 1.11" / group 0.820"
Rifle = Marlin 39AS .22LR
Optics = Centerpoint 4x32

My Marlin I fired today is not much better. I remember from today that it's not a very good range gun. What I posted was dang near luck and was well below my average groups for the day. It isn't worth showing the other targets at all.

The ol' Marlin 39AS is a great snap shooter at closer range at tin cans and the like, though. That's all I used it for back when I had access to shootin' land. Shootin' paper? I'm glad I have hammerless bolt guns for that. :cool:

I have to ask, what is the motivation for not allowing you to use stickers or mark on a target? I realize it's their playground but some of the rules I hear about at ranges are absurd.

So they can sell more of their own targets. If someone adds sticker dots, hand draws dots, or patches old holes with stickers or tape, then the shooter keeps using the same target over and over again. Then you don't need to buy extra targets from them, since you can't use any targets other than the gun range's targets.

I've been going there for years and it wasn't really enforced in the past. Things have changed. The whole range has changed. All the ranges in my area are getting tighter with rules and adding rules that relate to income production.
