Range Report-Various Ammo in Judge Public Defender

I finally found a range that will let me shoot buckshot, so I took the four types of ammo I have for it. Results are from 25 feet.
1) Hornady Triple Defense (.41 caliber FTX round backed by two .35 caliber balls) - Typical dispersion between 3" to 6", all hit in vital areas. This has become my go to round for defensive use.
2) Nobel Sport 3 pellet 000 Buck- 6" dispersion, all hit in vital areas
3) Magtech 45 LC 250gr Cowboy Action Loads - Consistent groupings of 2" to 3"
4) Winchester PDX-1 .410 (3 copper disks, 12 copper BBs) - The disks dispersed about 6-8", but the BBs were everywhere, including off of a 16" wide target.

The only round I would not recommend is the PDX-1. The dispersion of the BBs is so large that they would be nothing more than an annoyance. It might do better in a longer barreled Judge, but it is not a great fit for the 2 1/2" barrel of the Public Defender.

I bought 1 box of the PDX, and found that same result. The Hornady triple defense seems to me, to be the most predictable. I prefer 255 gr. hollow point half jackets rather than the cowboy loads. Full power, and very accurate.
The 2 loads that I like are the Hornady Triple Defense & the Federal OOO buckshot. The Federal load is usually in my Poly Public defender.
Next you should try out Federal Premium .410 Handgun 000 Buck, that's my primary Home Defense load, and based on my research it appears to be the most effective.

I have a bunch of the Nobel Sport 000, and it performed well, so unless there is something particularly different about the Federal 000, I think I'm good. Thanks, though.
Federal top choice never had the chance to try noble. I have distance accuracy thread somewhere here. Plus shootingthebull410 is a must view on you tube.

The stuff by Federal was designed specifically for the Judge's 3" rifled barrel whereas the Nobel Sport ammo you tested was obviously designed for a shotgun with an 18"+ unrifled barrel, ergo the Federal ought to get higher velocity, deeper penetration, less shot spread/deformation, and deeper penetration.

Thanks for the info.
You also get 4 pellets in the Federal vs 3 pellets in the Noble. This is the 2 1/2" shell.

Ah, more good info.
