It looks like I will be making a weekend trip into Ohio this summer. I was wondering what the CCW laws are like up there. What's allowed and what's not? Places I should avoid while carrying, etc.

I hold a valid CCDW License in Kentucky which is recognized by Ohio.

Premises that dispense liquor. Concealed firearms are also banned in a room or arena in which liquor is dispensed for which a class D permit has been issued. A class D permit is generally issued to an establishment that sells alcohol for consumption on the premises. Be certain of the type of permit and whether liquor is being dispensed before you enter with a concealed handgun.

Does that include restaurants that serve alcohol? Or is it just bars, pubs, etc?

dunno this is actually a confusing part of the current law, example wally world sells alcohol but not for drinking in the store, but they can sell on sundays iirc so they're a sub class D or something

my understanding is any place that sells alcohol for consumption even if it's not their primary source of income, this would include restaurants.
quite a few places are off limits, state buildings, pd's, are no brainers, every library i've been to has no weapon signs, infact quite a lot of businesses have the no gun signs up which makes them off limits..

make sure you look around the entrance real good for those signs, they're every where. you dont really notice how many there are untill you start looking for them.

btw OC is legal here if the desire arise, dunno about KY but i know some places do not allow OC.. if it happens to become visible in ohio you dont have to worry.

If a private business has a no weapons sign posted, does it make it illegal to carry there? In Kentucky the worst thing that can happen is the management can ask you to leave. If you refuse to leave, you are trespassing and subject to any laws in that matter. But not any weapons related charge.

I don't even bother to look for those signs here in KY. Unless it's a government owned building, or daycare, etc. Basically, if it won't land me in jail, I'll ignore it.

OH HIO has some definite restrictions. We have a movie theatre here in NKY, that their home office is in Ohio, and made management put a no gun sign at the door. In KY, you do not see those signs at all, but in OH HIO you do.

Thanks, Robby. From what I read in that PDF the alcohol restriction seems to apply anywhere alcohol is served by the drink or for consumption upon the premises. I guess that rules out restaurants. It also seems that carrying on private property that has posted no weapons signs will apparently make you guilty of trespass. No warnings, or get off my property or I'll call the cops.

yup thats exactly what it means.

they'd probably just ask you to leave but if they wanted to be dick heads it is a crime.. however they have to have the sign in plain view on the door or very close to the entrance, it also has to be at the door you came in.. example some malls put the signs at the main entrance but leave the secondary doors without a notice.. technically you could enter legally carrying in those doors but it's kinda a grey area.. most likely situation would simply be asked ot leave.. possibly even banned from coming back but i've not heard of any criminal charges in those situations.

they would have to prove any reasonable person would have noticed the signs and that you ignored them anyway, which ain't easy to prove.

also not sure about KY but in ohio if for some reason in a traffic stop by the cops you have to let them know you have a CCW the first chance you get to speak, even if you are not the driver.

I noticed that in my research. In KY it is not a requirement to notify the LEO during a stop. Some people say it is advisable to do so, others say only if asked. So far <knock on wood> I haven't been pulled over since I've had my CCDW.

TTG, Kentucky has about the same rule regarding restaraunts & bars minus the signage.
