Any suggestions on the ammo i carry for defense or any other info will be appreciated. 2245
In a life or death defensive encounter your gun's reliability is at the top of the list. Pick the ammo that is the most reliable in your particular gun. In a short barrel .22 I'd choose a premium brand loaded with a full metal jacketed (or gilded metal) bullet verses a lead bullet.

JHP ammo in any caliber short barrel handgun is just warm-n-fuzzy wishful thinking . At these velocities it may or may not expand and even if it does, if it doesn't reach and do damage to some vital organ or the central nervious system the bad guy will absorb a "bunch" before results are noticeable.

If a semi-auto (especially small caliber) is chosen for self defense it should be 100% reliable with it's favorite ammo and kept "clean" in between firing range sessions.

Will and Skill wins gun fights. More money should be spent on practice ammo than high speed whiz bang mall ninja gear .

I have a PT22, that I carry as a bug, when I have a revolver as my primary. It give me 9 shots while I slip a new Stellar Clip in my 905.

If the gun suits you, or you want a sweet to fire cheaply 22 semi auto they are great. Mine was quite accurate when I was shooting it last month.

They can be very particular about ammo. I would recommend a steady diet of CCI Mini Mags if it won't reliably feed the cheap bulk stuff. Rimfire pistols in general can be finicky, but they sure are cheap and fun to shoot.

Mine is the same way ,only CCI mini-mags will do . If I use bulk remington or federal its a jam from the get-go or every few ,what a pita

Thanks Moondawg on the ammo tip.I was loading stingers as carry round, however in light of your advice and the fact that out of appr. 700 rds inc. breakin that 4 of 7 failures,3 failure to feed during first 100rds, the balance of failures were stingers!Since Ive only fired 90 stingers ,4 failures is 4 to many, thus no more stingers.im happy to say, discounting the breakin period and the stingers i have had 100% reliability. also ive noticed now It seems to fire any of the premium brands ive tried.Again, thanks to Moondawg im carrying now 40 grain copper plated solid nose . cci mini mags, remingtion "golden bullett".to those of you with problems, remember break it in , stay with premium bullets ,break it in and keep it clean.stay safeand always carry! 2245

Guys and gals, the manual states not to use any hypervelocity round in the PT22.

Quik-shok and Stinger are in the hyper-velocity category. Don't use them in that gun.

I use CCI high velocity rounds, Remington high velocity rounds, and some Federal high velocity rounds. For carry I have the CCI mini-mags. They function in the PT22 just fine.

Oddly enough my PT22 example does fine with Remington Golden ammo.

I bought one (PT22) back in the 90's, for my wife. I traded it for a M85, because she thought the trigger pull was too heavy, and she doubted the stopping power of the .22 cartridge. I always thought it was a nice little pistol. I especially liked the tip up barrel feature.

Ok, first of all, I've never owned or fired the PT-22. That is because I really like the Berretta version with the exposed hammer. I did carry one of those for several years. I shot a few rats with mine out at a friends farm. With either HP or FMJ solids, it would usually take about half the head off on exit. I did shoot a couple of cotton-tails with it and had similar results. Most of these shots were around 7-25 feet. Very accurate little guns.
Do not under estimate the .22LR for defense. At close range they are very lethal.
Back in the '70, I traveled around on my bike and inhabited some nasty places. I saw a few shootings with both a .22 and a .25 (fortunately, I was never involved in any) and the .22 made a more serious wound and ended the fight more often than the .25.
Today, the only reason I do not carry a pocket .22 is that I have both a .22 mag and a .380 in a package that is at least as easy to conceal as the .22 and both have more power. With the increase in ammo costs, I have been thinking that another pocket .22LR might be in store, though.
Remember, a good hit with a .22 is better than a miss with a .45.

I sure keep thinkin' I want the Taurus PT22.

I've had a Beretta Bobcat .22 for about 12 years. Fun to shoot but a jam-o-matic on anything but the solid point Mini-Mags. Sadly, I've pretty much worn out the Bobcat. I'll put in one replacement part, then take it to the range to break something else. Rinse and repeat. Over and over.

I really miss that gun and even with the troubles, I want a replacement for it. Almost like missing a girlfriend that's always full of drama. For some inexplicable reason, irresistible. :-[

Academy lists the Taurus PT22 for $209. I might have to see if they have any in stock and get myself a Christmas present. Hmmmm. :-X

Thanks for the reply, Robby. I'm really leanin' to the Taurus instead of another Beretta.

I like the DAO of the Taurus. The first thing to fail on my Beretta was the DA getting light strikes. The hammer, sear assembly of the Beretta has tiny contact points to accommodate both SA and DA. I figure the Taurus has got to have a wider bearing surface since it's not built to do both things.

I used to carry one and is really good weapon the only down side is that it does

not have any stopping power at all, unless you do a head shot. Id never had to

use it in a defensive situation but I think is a great little pistol.

I just noticed on all the PT22 pics I've seen, they're made in the USA? I thought all Taurus were made in Brazil? Hmmmm.
It's too small to be imported because of ATF point system..Thats why Beretta's are made in MD..Been this way since 1968.

New pt-22

I just bought one for my wife for Christmas. It already has broken grips, but it shoots great on walmart Federal brick ammo. I had 6 jams in the first 2 clips, now not one since for 300 rds. It's a solid little gun. The pearl grips seem to be a problem. I paid 225 and just noticed them online in stock for the same one I bought for 199. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/18337

Not sad I gave a local the business, but that's a good price and the only other place I've seen them in stock since a month before Christmas.
