I had read the term 'pre chief' somewhere along the line, and it got me curious. I always thought I had an old 'Chief's Special', but after that I got looking and no where does it say that, only 'Airweight 38 spl. ctg.. And with the ser# 81xxx (# on the butt).

My question pertains to the fair value, as a customer of mine with a 3" Lady Smith SS is interested in trading me. The last time we talked, I told her I would probably have to throw in some cash, as her's is in better shape than my blued 2". But I've since read about the 'pre chief's' and am wondering if I would be short changing myself.

So, does anyone know if that model and number would make a hoot of difference value wise?

Hmmm. Just saw an old auction from Nov 11. Guy had 40 bids on a pre chief #44710, went for $709.
