Poll: Which ammo gives you the least failure to fires out of a PT series pistol

Trying to evaluate different practice ammo with my new PT145. Any input, or votes would be helpful for all of us I feel. ;)

I've never had a problem with anything I've shot. WWB, CCI brass or the silver one.

I've only put 80 rounds through mine so far and I've had FTF with 1 UMC and 1 WWB JHP. Federal hydrashocks and CCI's shto great.

Never failed to fire. Failure to keep magazine in mag well? Well that's another story.

I did clean it prior to shooting. The FTF's occured pretty close together at around the 40th round through the gun.

Never had a ftf on any of my taurus's. One fail to chamber which was my own fault for my hand pressing the mag release a littel and lowering the mag. changed my grip and fixed that.

out of all the pistols I shoot (Taurus or other) the only ammo I can think of that has never given me a failure to fire is the CCI Blazer Brass. I can remember getting a few from WWB UMC S&B and some reloads using winchester primers. Never had one single problem with CCI primers over 10000+ rounds

Generally anything with a brass case should feed. Some guns don't like the Blazer aluminim or the Wolf (or other brands) steel case so if you are going to try either of those, I'd recommend to start with only 1 box so you aren't stuck with say 950 rounds that your gun doesn't like.

Then again, an occasional FTF might be good malfunction practice....

Haven't had any ammo related problems with mine. Pistols can be ammo sensitive and what works in mine may not work in yours even if it is an similar example of the same model.WWB is what I use most for practice and SilverBear is right behind. Could be mechanical malfunction, limp wristing, or the other reasons posted by others. Sometimes bad habits creep in and we are unaware of them until we catch them ourselves or someone else points the problem out.Dirt can get in some frustrating places. Lots of people have to be reminded to clean even the firing pin channel and not to lube it.

My PT92 runs on steel or aluminum, as well as brass, of course.

No failures of any kind with any ammo in my PT92 or PT908. Even my reloads!
My PT945 does not like to feed semi-wadcutters but will feed and fire anything else.

I'm not asking as there is a dimension difference in diameter between 9mm (aka 9x19) and 9mmM or 9x18 (which is technically 9.2x18).

In order to figure out what happened I grabbed some 9x18 ammo from the safe and the barrel of my 9mm XD. Joshua, you are likely lucky that it didn't fully chamber as it might have gone badly with an over size bullet not wanting to go down the barrel.

But yes, I'll believe that it fed, once.

Hard to mistake 9 by18 for 9mm. Luger. I shoot both type of pistol and ammo regularly and the 9 by18 stands out in stark contrast to the longer cased Parabellum ammo. I never shoot the 2 different sizes on the same day just as a precaution. Back on track. Since there are many reasons why a pistol will fail to fire or fail to eject, it is in the best interests of all of us to aquaint ourselves with as many possibilities as one can. That's partly why we are here. ;D :D

I brought it up, I guess. This was 9 years ago.

At one point in time I didn't know much about centerfire pistols, being raised on shotguns and .22lr. We do not use rifles for deer here in the State of Indiana.

Shortly after I got my Taurus 92 I went to get some ammo for it. I asked the gunshop guy for 9mm. He handed me a box of 50 Al Blazer cartridges.

What he gave me fit in the magazine just fine. I decided Blazer was junk however when it failed to cycle half the time and left unburnt powder in the chamber.

It was, however, fairly accurate.

I got back into the house after shooting all 50, and then noticed the box said "9x18 Makarov" on it. I didn't remember this being a designation for the 9mm, so I looked it up on the 'net. It seems this stuff was not for my gun and less powerful than the 9x19mm. I felt a bit... um... embarassed.

Lesson learned however: The Taurus 92 is built like a tank. I don't even want to know what kind of pressure I was pushing.

Also, don't trust gunshop owners. That particular gunshop lost my business and shut down just last year.

Even the gunshop I use now makes mistakes. They allow me behind the counter, and while rootin' through some 9mm ammo I found some labelled "9mm Corto." I brought this to the attention of the guy at the register, and explained that "corto" means "short," or 9mm short, the name for .380acp in Europe. I recommended that it not be sold as 9x19. The oversight was corrected right away and there was some ass chewin' of the stock boy.

No, it wasn't safe. However, it's good to know that, in an emergency situation, the 9x18 can be fired from a Taurus 92. I do NOT in any way, shape, or form endorse this practice. However, if the Chinese invade, maybe a lighter recoil spring would be a good idea ;)

I wouldn't even put that in the Emergency category. You are lucky to not have blown something up. 380 would be in the emergency category as it SHOULDN'T damage or blow the firearm. I don't know if the old Blazer Alum ammo used an undersized bullet or not, your box likely did. Otherwise....

I should state that I have not attempted to fire 380 out of a 9mm. I have heard that you can fire it through a 9x18 barrel but your accuracy will be poor and your slide may not cycle totally/reliably.

I feel that I should also state that by blow the firearm I mean a catastrophic failure of the breech/action to contain blast of the cartridge. Yes, technically when you fire a cartridge you are igniting a small explosion which pushes the bullet (the weakest "wall" of the chamber) down the barrel. The other common term for this is a KA-BOOM (usually but not necessarily justifiably attributed to Glocks).

Oh, and I would have went into that gunshop and politely told the guy that he sold me unsafe ammo. One of my last comments would have been that if there had been an injury he likely would not have talked to me about it, he would have talked to an attorney. Yes, I had a similar conversation a while back with a local tire shop that couldn't bother to tighten (AT ALL) the lug nuts after mounting tires on my Wrangler. My gf almost lost a tire going down the highway. As it was she lost all 5 lugnuts. Got lucky, no damage to the TJ (tire didn't come all the way off) and I had other lugnuts that would work

I appreciate the concern. I believe the bullets were swaged down upon firing however. After discovering that the rounds were wrong, I pulled a bullet from the same lot and miked it. It did mike to a bit over .36.

I'm a gunsmith, not a lawyer. I therefore must state that your mileage may vary, and I do not recommend doing this intentionally.

My 45acp practice ammo is 230gr. MagTech FMJ......it shoots to the same point of aim as my carry ammo....230gr. Federal HydraShoks. Both have been flawless in their uses. No problems whatsoever.

Can we say catatstrophic faliure and blow up for using 9 by 18 in a .380 or 9mm. Luger, if is possible to chamber a round? I knew you could. ;D :D Pressures in the chamber would go off the meter and overstress every bit of metal in the area. Not to say what the result would do to the shooter and gun. Don't try this at home boys and girls. We have professional idiots for that. ;D ::) :eek: :D Will know kick this :soapbox: back under the table. :thumb: :clap: :yipee: :yipee:
