The downside of the P38... She was cold!

Without that big heater in front of the cockpit pilots would take off in a humid tropical climate and cruise in freezing air!

Great bird though!

There was heat provide by the engines and this provided a problem in those tropical climates at low altitudes, because the canopy could not be opened all the way due to the creation of buffering. When they clime to high altitudes, the heat ducks from the engines could not keep the heated air hot, so what they did was design an electric heated flight suit. You can Google the P-38 and find the info on this.

Exactly, they borrowed the heated flight suit from the Bombers. The waist gunners in particular needed all the help they could get at altitude, in the winter specially.

My grandfather in law shuttled planes back and forth to Europe in WWII. He was not a combat pilot. Of all the planes he flew, large and small, the P-38 was his favorite.

Yes it was. Kelly Johnson's major contribution to WWII. Of course, the U-2; SR-71 were still in his (and Lockheed's Skunk Work's) future.

...and many more including Constellation and all variants; C-130 and the Stealth Fighter.
I am a big fan of his work!
