I am going to get my ccw and have been told I should consider getting a Florida non-resident permit instead. Benefits include more states, shorter training time (8 vs 12 hrs), longer permit length and several others. I'd like to hear comments from others on this.

I had heard something similar but I was told to get one in addition to my home states (not instead of).

Go for the Ohio permit, then contact Centre County Sheriff and obtain your PA non-resident permit. Last count, that will give you a total of 39 states. Might be more by now. $28 and a copy of your Ohio License and Ohio DL.

I got mine when I got my Ohio CHL, renewed it when I renewed my Ohio CHL, and both are up for renewal this year. 10 day turn around.

In Ohio too and just getting mine next week. Been shooting since I was 8 (wont say how old I am) and still don't think 12 hours of formal training is unreasonable to be schooled on safety and laws etc. Google up Ohio CCW classes you should be able to find something with some scheduling flexibility. I too want some "travel" CCW especially to Florida, but I am having trouble figuring out how to cross Alabama.

I think your better off getting your Ohio CHL. The training in Ohio will give you the base for Ohio's laws, which I think you should have. For more information about concealed carry, check out Ohioians for Concealed Carry. Great website and lots of good CHL info.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but my Ohio CCW license expires this May. What is the procedure for renewal, and when should I start the renewal process?

Ohio dosen't issue a CCW (sorry), but to renew your License to Carry a Concealed Handgun will vary by county. Check with your local Sherrif's department as to what they recommend. Here in Ottawa County, they told me a month and it was a whole lot less.

ok.sorry for the faux pas. I'll check with the Ashland county sheriff's dept. for sure. They're pretty good guys there, and the captain in charge of concealed carry licenses is very progun.

I may be wrong but I believe most States require that you have a resident license to obtain a non-resident one. Utah required a copy of mine for the application process but Arizona did not.

Just a follow up, the Florida and the Ohio class are taught at the same time but the Ohio class is extended 4 hrs. Not sure what the additional teaching is. Also, according to this guy, of the last 18 classes he's taught (30 or so per class) all but 2 people have gone the Florida route. This not an addition to the Ohio permit.

I just read that PA will no longer issue by mail after 3/31/11. From that date forward you will have to make a trip to PA to Apply. When did you get yours?

I got mine in 2003, renewed it in 2008. This is current as of a year ago. I suggested Centre County because it was quick and I know that Nau is pro gun.

Unfortunately I just found this on the sheriffs website:
License to Carry Firearms

License to Carry Firearms Applications Via Mail Discontinued as of March 31, 2011

As the result of requirements of Act 66, 2005, applicants must have their photo and signature captured electronically into our system. At this time there is no manner to complete these requirements without the personal appearance of the applicant.

Therefore we will not be able to process any mailed applications received after March 31, 2011.

You might check this out and go elsewhere

az may be an option
I can tell you from personal experience that Arizona isn't a bad option. In fact, I got my Arizona license a couple weeks before I got my Ohio CHL. All you've got to do there is call AZDPS, and they'll mail you out an application package. It gives you the same reciprocity as a Florida license, and it covers Alabama, which PA doesn't.

Ccw class

To update, wife and I just last week bit the bullet and took the 12 hr class. I hafta say it wasn't bad. At least the instructor kept it interesting. We applied at the local sheriff a couple days ago. It really surprised me that the wife went thru it, and she put 19 outta 20 shots in the middle!! Now we need to look for a small gun for her and maybe a 2nd smaller one for me. I really like my 40 cal 24/7 but would like a more concealable pocket pistol, maybe in a 25 or 32. If anybody has or knows of a gun (or 2 pack) for sale please let me know.
