Hey y'all, just wanted to introduce myself. A few months ago I got my first pistol, a Taurus 809. It's a great gun to take to the range and shoot, and will be used primarily for personal protection and to carry around the ranch in case we run into any rattlesnakes. I live in Houston, Texas, and spend as much time as possible out in Real County (near the bustling metropolis of Leakey).

I bought this gun for several reasons. I grew up around guns at my buddy's ranch, shooting rifles, shotguns and handguns every time we went out there, but I never owned a handgun myself. So while shooting is not new to me, I wanted something bigger to hone my shooting skills with at the range. Then when I feel very confident with my shooting skills, I'll take a CHL class. This gun is obviously too big to concealed-carry easily, but once I get my CHL I'll keep the 809 by my bed and buy a smaller pistol to carry.

The reason I chose the Taurus 809 specifically is because it has a lot of safety features - external thumb safety, double action trigger pull, and the "loaded chamber" indicator. My fiancee did not grow up around guns and has never shot one (though I will change that soon). All the safety features make her feel much more comfortable sleeping near a loaded gun. Right now, she doesn't really understand how a double action can be safe - she needs the visual of seeing a "safety on" switch. Over time and use, I'm sure she'll become more comfortable, but this seemed like a perfect baby-step into the world of guns for her, if you will.

I also liked that the 809 has the Picatinny rail so I can put a light and/or laser on it.

Right after I bought the gun, my google searches for accessories, gun cleaning tips, etc all kept bringing me back to this forum, so I figured I'd join up and hopefully add to the wealth of knowledge on this site over time. Looking forward to speaking with some fellow safety-conscious gun owners!

Howdy, and welcome from Dallas!
Lots of happy 809 owners here, myself included. My wife really likes it, much better than my 709 (my EDC).
