Hi all I recently purchased a model 44 with the 6.5 barrel and have a few questions.
(1) what will this gun handle load wise, I have been reloading for several years without incident for all of my other calibers. I'm not recoil sensitive and why own a 44 mag and download.
(2) Who makes a good set of Wood grips without breaking the bank? I have big hands and the stock rubber grips leave a lot to be desired.

I use all standard 44 magnum loads from all the regular ammo manufacturers. I don't really want to comment on an open forum for reloads as Taurus will negate the warranty if they can link you to reloads.

There is a guy on ebay who makes wood grips for the M44. I am sure someone will be along with a link for you. I think Altamont (spelling?) makes them too.

I just popped over to the Altamont website and you have to search under Judge grips. Apparently they fit the M44 also.

I tried the grips from Thailand and wasn't happy with them. There was a gap at the back strap that I couldn't get to close, so I ordered the Altamont grips and absolutely love them!

I know it's confusing but Taurus makes the M44 and the M44C. The M44 is a large frame 6 shot. The M44C is a compact frame 5 shot. The compact frame is the same as the judge. The grips for the M44 and the M44C are completely different.
I think you need a larger grip, like one that will fit my Taurus 608. I got the wooden Hogue grips at the link below and really love them. It has the 44 listed as compatible.

FWIW, I removed my grips from my M44 and my wifes M66 357 magnum and the frames inside the grips were the ~exact~ same size. I readily swapped grips between the 2. The only difference was the bottom alignment pin was in a slightly different spot. Perhaps 3/8" on center different. If you tighten the screw you still have 2 alignment pins in the top of the frame.

I would extrapolate that as you could buy grips for the M66 and expect them to fit your M44 and Vice versa. I would also say that grips for the 608 would also cross over. I'm not sure about the m44c as I've never heard of that model.

That's all I've got. It was right in my hands to see and swap out in person.

Sadly, Altamont's Judge Grips will only fit the .44 Tracker, not the standard M44 which uses a larger frame. If it were me, then I would just get a pair of grips from Taurus, they're inexpensive, look good, and are sure to fit.

I am not sure of the fit of these grips as I don't know which M44 you have nor what Apex considers a "large" frame.....

As far as ammo, again, that depends on which model you have. If yours is the same frame size as the M607/608, anything the S&W M29 can handle, so can the Taurus. If you plan on feeding it a steady diet of full-power loads, I would suggest installing a ball-detent crane latch.

I am sure you know a lot more about Taurus revolvers than me ~and~ you are a senior member. I would defer to your judgement. However Altamont says they would fit. That is all I know and I am not being sarcastic in any way. Maybe Altamont needs to check the facts and correct their website?

I can attest however that my wifes M66 grips swapped over to my M44 and vice versa. Easy peasy.
I love my Altamont grips on my 617. Shown with my model 66 with Hogue grips.
