Full disclosure: I am a 55 year old first-time gun owner (sad, I know). I shot a bolt action 22 rifle when I was a kid, but never really pursued anything since. Never owned a handgun but had always been a staunch supporter of the right to bear arms. Part of the issue was knowing I held something in my hand that could end mine or someone else's life immediately, permanently and quickly; it gave me a sick feeling in my stomach. But with the recent attacks on our 2nd amendment and the increasing need to defend my family and myself, I sucked it up, buttercup.
Hours of research and dozens of YouTube videos later, I settled on the PT111 G2 as my choice for the first handgun of my life. Haters being what they were, I waded through the negative press and compared the quality, features and price to other higher-end handguns and took that leap of faith. And boy am I glad I did.
Here are some observations:
PRICE: For what I got, for the price, it was a no-brainer. The quality, features, workmanship, etc. compared to guns costing twice as much or more, I'm tickled. I know there is a wide swing of prices out there for the PT111 G2, but I got it for $219 at gunbuyer.com. That, along with a $35 FFL transfer fee at my local pawn shop and I still came in around $250. So I took what I ended up saving and got an UNLIMITED shooting yearly membership at my local indoor gun range. So for the price of a comparable Glock, I have an excellent piece and all the shooting I can take. As excited as I am, I'd love to go plinking every day, but the danged ammo costs money too. But I'll definitely get my money's worth out of the range membership.
ACCURACY: Trust me, it's me, not the gun. As someone who in 55 years had never fired a 9mm handgun, and a couple of years out from rotator cuff surgery, I'm not doing too bad. In addition to being near-sighted and learning to aim with blurry focus, I have the usual twitchiness associated with newbies, but I think I'm getting better. I've attached graphics of my first 300 rounds (BTW with no mechanical hitches) and I think I'm making improvements.
THE TRIGGER: By all means the biggest debate out there about this gun. I myself kinda like it. As a newbie first time handgun owner, it's like an extra safety feature to me. There may be a day when I get past it, but for now it works for me. I don't mind pressing the trigger all the way back, a little extra "commitment" to the act of firing the weapon. God forbid if I was ever in a shit-and-git situation where I had to use my gun for defense, I'll be pressing that thing back THROUGH the handle. The last thing I'll be thinking is whether or not it's the perfect trigger, trust me. Plus the slight resistance I feel right before it breaks lets me know, for better or worse, exactly when the gun will fire. And then there’s the small semi-auto reset which is comparable to anything out there.
Anyway, I hope my ramblings make sense. I'm ecstatic to be, not only a handgun owner, but a Taurus PT-111 G2 Millennium black/stainless (it's so sweet looking) owner. And glad to have found this forum.
