Same here I have fired the Thompson but not the MP40
I shot a MP40 and it was very controllable.
I've shot both, I was shooting the Texas state 3 Gun Match at Best of the West shooting Range in 2014 and the 11th Armored Division Museum from Ft. Worth brought an M3 Grease Gun an MP40 and a Thompson, they were charging $25 per Gun or $60 to shoot 20 rounds each from all three, needless to say I went home $60 lighter that Day.
The Mp40 was a capture from WWII, they gave the date and location as well as the circumstances under which it was captured but I don't recall them as I was excited about the opportunity to shoot these historic Guns.
This was My impression:
While both were very accurate and easy to shoot, the Thompson seemed to have more recoil, probably due to the fact that the barrel was higher in relation to the stock than the Mp40 and that it was a .45acp vs 9mm for the German Gun.
As far as the recoil goes You didn't feel each round, it was more of a steady push from the Gun in both cases.
If I had to choose one of the three I shot I would still be sitting there trying to make up My mind.
