The 2013 catalog shows this revolver as .357 Mag, but does not say .38 Special. Most (if not all) of the other .357's are specified also as .38's. I wonder if this is just an editing oversight, or if for some reason the 617 does not have .38 capability. I've always thought any .357 could also fire the .38. The link is to the catalog, the 617 specs are on page 34.

Don't worry, it will fire .38 Special. My favorite self defense load for my Model 617 are Remington
Golden Sabers in .38 Special +P. .38 Special is very comfortable to shoot in the Model 617.

Thanks. Well, you've got both of what I'm considering for my 2nd purchase (I just got the 992 .22LR/.22WMR). I'm considering the 617 with 2" and the 66 with 4". What would your opinion be on one of these for CC? I'm a very senior citizen and I want to stay with revolvers.

Carry what you shoot best, but my choice wold be the 617. Smaller and lighter, easier to conceal, and you don't really need the adjustable sights of the 66 in most self defense situations.
