Hello Folks. I recently acquired a Public Defender Poly with a problem. When manually cocking the hamer et. al. single action, the hammer will not stay back/cocked. I do note the transfer bar rising while I manually hold the hammer back, and falling when I release the hammer. I am not intimately familiar with the configuration of the firing mechanisim of this weapon, so any guidance on troubleshooting would be much appreciated. Please advise of any supplemental required information.

(And yes, I am aware of the Taurus warranty and proceedure to request an RMA. However, this Judge had very visible tool marks on the fasteners and other evidence of having been opened, as such likely voiding the warranty. So it seems I am in the situation of fixing it myself, or paying someone to. I wouldn't call myself a master fabricator, but I can manage most making endeavors. )

Thanks again,

GUS

First -- welcome to the forum! Good place to find out stuff about your gun.

Not a gunsmith either, but just a couple of ideas. Seems as if the sear is not engaging for some reason.

1 Is the trigger resetting far enough forward to engage the sear? Have you tried holding the hammer back and pushing the trigger forward, and if you do, will it engage the sear? Sometimes people will put a lighter trigger return spring in to lighten the trigger pull, and an over-lightened trigger return spring might not move the trigger enough to engage the sear. Or there might be some mechanical issue that is interfering with the trigger moving forward.

2. If #1 above isn't the case, then there might be a problem with the sear -- maybe someone (you mentioned tool marks) tried to adjust the mating surfaces on the sear to achieve a lighter/crisper trigger pull and either left a burr or just messed up the engagement. If that's the cases, I think you have two choices:

a. embrace your revolver as double-action only, or;

b. send it to the factory (I don't think Taurus sells replacement hammers or triggers).

But as I said -- I'm not a gunsmith. Maybe someone else has something to add.

@230JHP Thank you for being so quick with the response. Your guidance regarding the sear proved to be the key. It wasn't indexing at full set. I pinned the hammer spring, removed the hammer, removed fowling (teensy burr in the hinge of sear), re-assembled, and as they say, bam. It did appear that someone had replaced the springs, but when replacing the hammer, it was not clocked in the correct orientation (I wanted to put the hammer in backwards to post to ask for continued guidance, but I didn't want to break anything more than it already had!).

Thank you again. Much appreciated!

Anecdotally, when Taurus sells a revolver, they should include a handful of paperclips. I don't say that with any malice. I like working on my belongings. Its just it took me awhile to find some paperclips.
