I am starting to outgrow my small handgun safe and after acquiring a few long guns I am starting to look for a larger gun safe that can hold approx 24 guns. Can any of you provide details on safe you currently or have owned in the past as well as the pros and cons of each?

Also do any of you have the information as to the best time of the year to purchase safes?

Where are you going to put the safe? Is it going to be hauled up or down stairs? Need to know how heavy it is when pondering where to put it you know. So many designs out there, fireproof or not or for how long? Liberty makes some nice safes and Stack-on makes some nice locking cabinets.

Depends on what you want. Fire-proof? Difficult to break into? If you are simply looking for storage, a Stack On would work for $200 or so. If you are want more serious protection, then you spend $450-$700. I am also in the 24 gun market due to expansion. I am waiting for my local Tractor Supply Co. to get some more stock but when they do they have really nice Cannons which are fire rated for about 30 minutes at @ 1200 degrees. The 24 gun model weighs 360 lbs and is somtimes on sale for $450. That's the one I will be getting as soon as they go on sale. There are some better, more expensive ones out there (Heritage, Liberty) but I don't think the price difference justifies the quality difference.

I'll second looking at the Cannon safes at Tractor Supply. I bought one last year, just about this time, with the mechanical combination, which is what I prefer. Nice safe. And as I recall, it was on sale. Heck of a job getting it in the house, but well worth the work and investment.

There's a Cannon I want at Walmart right now, marked down from 600 to 500. It holds 24 long guns and is relatively compact and has pockets on the doors for handguns and stuff. I like it, but have to wait as I need other stuff first. Bummer.

That's the same one at my Tractor Supply for $499 every day. When they run a sale it's $450. Our Walmart is also selling them for more than Tractor Supply.

Thanks for all the input so far. I am looking for a fire rated safe that is fairly sturdy. Luckily I have a single level house built on slab so getting it into the house should not be too bad. I have seen the Cannons and Liberty safes locally and they are prices very similar to the prices you all have quoted. I am going to have to start watching closely and see if I can talk any of the stores down a little.

Native - - - - - don't wait TOO long! There's a little-known rider on the Feinstein bill which limits gun safes to TEN guns! Also, I think she has also proposed that your combination be on file with the FBI. :)

Buy the biggest one you can afford that will fit in your home, there is always time to fill it up in the future.

I decided on a gun safe and picked up one last week at tractor supply. It was the Winchester 24 gun safe. It was a little more than I was looking for but it was in stock and is finished really nicely. The door organizer was included so it ended up being a wash with the others I was looking at.
