A 6 inch barrel revomver is going to be a little harder to carry, but it is definately in the realm of possibilitry. I also like a 6 inch barrel for a backup while hunting, usually a .357 Mag since I only have to worry about hogs, and no bears.
Consider a Dan Wesson revolver with interchangeable barrels. Also, you can get two good used pistols for about the price of a new one. You might consider getting a snubbie for carry and a 6 inch for hunting, where you can carry it exposed.
