Two years ago I started a rescue/restoration of an old and neglected Mauser K98. The back story can be found at K98 Mauser Project Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.
The ensuing two years have entailed selling one house and buying another, moving 580 miles, learning a totally new metropolis, finding a new church home, educating myself about Oklahoma tornadoes and weather, checking out the local gun stores, and watching my grandchildren grow and develop.
One failure on the rifle was the Allen ammo holder I had put on the stock. The holder was advertised as being designed for 30 caliber ammo, and 8mm Mauser is almost identical. The elastic loops stretched to where the Mauser 8mm ammo would fall out via gravity; it sure didn't last very long. I replaced it with a Voodoo Tactical adjustable cheek rest with ammo carrier.
Every now and then I would search the internet for a long eye relief scout scope, but the inexpensive ones did not match my criteria for keeping the scout rifle project "cheap." Even used ones on eBay were priced the same as new ones elsewhere, until two weeks ago. I found a listing on eBay for a lightly-used NcStar 2-7x32E scout scope at a low price. I bid $26 and.....son-of-a-gun, I won! (Told ya I was looking for cheap. 😁)
The kitchen scale says the loaded package weighs 10 pounds. That don't quite fit Jeff Cooper's parameters, but hey - it's my scout rifle and I like it. 😋 Total cost as shown: $236. Time to take it out, sight it in, and let it roar!
