Hi all, new member here. A friend of mine has a Ruger LCP and after handling it and doing a bit of research I decided I wanted the Taurus TCP. I liked the idea of a locking slide, and I read mostly good things about it, especially with the latest revisions. I ended up finding one that was used once at the range. The previous owner had broken her wrist (unrelated), so the kick was too much for her. She traded it to a local shop, and they sold it to me with the Crimson Trace mounted for $300. A few questions:

  • She put a neon green camo wrap on it. Not vinyl or sticker, but actually bonded to the surface (a paint of some sort, I'm not terrible familiar with graphics). The shop used carb cleaner to get it off the slide, worked flawlessly. I'm concerned the polycarbonate will get ruined if I try to get it off the grip. Any advice? I may just remove it and reapply a matte black or carbon fiber graphics.

  • Was $300 as good a deal as I think?
  • What are the best FMJ, and the best hollow rounds for it?
  • Any radioactive sights available for it?
  • General thoughts on the TCP itself, as well as with the CT laser...

Thanks :)

Welcome aboard from Northern Illinois! That package seems like a pretty good deal as I'v seen the CT laser for 150.00 +/-. Your LGS was probably happy to find a buyer for the customized pistol. Maybe try and learn what product was used on the grips/frame and contact the manufacturer for the possibility of removal. You are correct I think in avoiding solvents to try and remove it. Re-coating it with your preference is better and again the manufacturer can either tell you what is compatible for an overcoat or supply another color.

I don't have one yet so I cannot weigh in on the preferred ammo. I am thinking that most any factory .380 rounds will work, but again you will want to run a few hundred through to ascertain reliability for carry purposes.

I believe that the sights are fixed so that precludes anything like tritium sights. Some folks I hear are using nail polish, paint or luminescent coatings to make them stand out better.

I love my TCP. Mine will shoot every FMJ round I can find. It has never had a problem with winchester ppu and others. Hornaday 380 Auto 90 gr FTX hollow points run great in mine and thats what it's loaded with in my nightstand. Keep it clean and it will function properly. I did use some nail polish on the front sight to brighten it up a bit. I don't know anything about the laser though sorry. Good luck with it. It's a great gun. Hold onto it tightly when shooting and make sure you use the tip of your trigger finger not the inside of the first nuckle. Makes accuracy much better.

thanks for the input and quick response! i did some googling and found one company that puts trit sites on the front, but not on rear. was hoping for a full solution, but i'd just avoid it altogether if i can't do it right. the laser is pretty sufficient. might consider glow paint.

i figured the price was because of the grip. they actually wanted a lot more, but i offered $300, and he said that was basically his cost. i suspected he would be happy to get rid of it, and i figured i'd be able to deal with the grip anyway. i was hoping for a home solution for the grip, but oh well. don't want to hurt it.

I love my TCP. I touched up the sights with just a bit of white paint from the hobby shop and they stand out much better. When shot properly I can shoot just as well with this little beast as I can with its big bro the 709. I've never had any issues with any FMJ's, but the Hornady Zombie Max HP's it did not like. I came across a deal on the 85 gr Winchester Silvertips on Grafs and stocked up, and it runs those perfectly. To be such a short barrel, this little piece is accurate, and fun to shoot.

Mine actually fed Zombie Max better than Hydra-Shok. I carry Critical Defense in it as my PD ammo. That super-steep feed ramp seems to like the tapered bullets more. But YMMV, best way is to experiment.

Great price on the gun, even if it is ugly :)

(Sounds like the thing was dipped, and no, I don't have a good solution for getting it off the poly, sorry).

thanks for the info on the rounds. i called a few places on the dip. looking like i might just need to redo it. no regrets on the pickup. felt good about the price. was seeing them go for $370 with the laser that had a switch at a local show, and the crimson is so much better.

Love my TCP, I've lately been using CCI blazer jhp, which from what I can tell is out of production, but I still have about 40rds. I've got the Critical Defense as well but the CCI seems to feed better. Would love a pic of your new gun!

i'll get a pic soon. it's certainly unique! i was told that since carb cleaner took the graphics off so easily on the slide, it should work the same on the frame.

HMMM...then why didn't they do it?

the shop didn't want to chance it, they weren't sure. they said they weren't concerned about the metal slide, but were uneasy doing it to the plastic. i called a place that does these graphics and they said if the graphics came off the slide as easy as they did with carb cleaner, and there is no primer on the slide, then we can assume the same for the grip.

My TCP feeds Critical Defense 100% reliably. I have crippled hands, so I sometimes have feed issues with range ammo (limpwristing a bit). But those tapered bullets seem to really help. :D

Welcome from NY, home of Remington Arms, the longest continuous manufacturer of guns in America! (We also host Kimber America, and used to have Savage Arms and Ithaca Guns but screwed those up).

I have a TCP and so far it has shot 4 different kinds of FMJ in 95 gr with no issues. Remington, Speer Lawman, Blazer Brass & Federal - all good so far.
