Ummm, anyone know or have a good FAQ on how to remove my slide catch spring (the small piece of metal in the takedown pin hole)? I cant seem to find much useful online. I am no gunsmith by any means, but can follow instruction well! Or is this a task for someone who knows a lot more?

Thanks!

It requires disassembly of the frame. I know a couple of people here have disassembled their frames, but (AFAIK) nobody has posted a how-to thread yet.

Since I don't have a Taurus handy I'm not going to try to give instructions. I will say that you might be able to get it out without complete disassembly. It's held in by the two pins in the frame, above the trigger, that hold in the locking block. If you only drift the pins enough to clear the spring you might be able to remove it. Put the frame inside a gallon size ziplock back so you don't lose any parts. There are some small parts under spring pressure that can take off at warp speed.

Just keep in mind that those pins hold a lot more than just that one spring. Have the parts diagram from the manual handy so you can reference it.

Why would you want to do that?

Does it appear bent? Did you insert the takedown pin under the spring? I think you might be better off sending it back to Taurus, or taking it to a gunsmith.

A friend of mine did what you describe, placing the pin under the spring and broke it while firing. Same symptoms. He sent his in to Taurus for repair, and all is well now. His turn around was three to four weeks by the way.

It's actually quite simple. What you need is a small punch, just smaller than the diameter of the pin (i believe 3/32 is the size) and longer than the grip is wide. I found a 3 pack at a big blue home improvement store, one of the pins will also punch out the extractor pin.

What you will also need is a block of wood with a hole drilled in it. Not all the way through, and just larger than the frame pin. I have a piece of 1x2 that I covered in leather with contact cement and staples. It makes a great small 'anvil' that won't mar guns.

With the gun left side up, (the safety/release/etc.) facing you, hammer the two pins out one at a time. It actually takes a few good whacks. When this is done, you can kind of pull the front end of the frame up and forward a little bit, just to get the back of the frame clear of the grip. Just work it up and down gently and slowly until the trigger swings up (the frame kind of pivots under the back of the grip) and the frame pulls free.

Now, watch out! The safety is held in only by friction, and if it pulls up the little ball bearing will disappear forever! I luckily found mine... The slide stop also just kind of 'sits there' for you to lift up and the spring will pop free. It takes a little twisty-motion to get the spring back in, but installation is otherwise 'reverse of removal' (my FAVORITE Hayne's manual quote).

I have done it, and have pictures but would like to post them in a separate thread.
