Pols: Welfare abuse runs deep - BostonHerald.com

Read the full report at the above link. We payed and are paying for this kind of entitlement every day we go to work or pay taxes. SUCKS!!!! for lack of a better expression right now. Good to see our tax dollars at work makes me proud....

Kimball Clark, 45, was locked up Friday on drug-dealing charges — again — when he was overheard using his one phone call to ask the person on the other end of the line to “get my EBT card and go to the ATM and get the money to bail me out, get me outa here tonight,” according to a Boston police report.

State Rep. Russell E. Holmes (D-Boston), another advocate for tough reforms, said he was hardly surprised that a drug suspect would try to bail himself out with money from a taxpayer-funded EBT card.

“It’s exactly the type of activity that can occur when folks are allowed to get money off their EBT card,” Holmes said.

Clark, who gave police a South End address, is charged with distribution of heroin within 1,000 feet of a school. He posted bail and was released, but it is unclear where he got the money. Police said he had $758 in cash on him when he was busted Friday in what cops say was a deal in progress in Dorchester, but that cash was seized. Efforts to reach Clark for comment yesterday were unsuccessful. It is unclear whether he has an EBT card assigned to him. His prior convictions include assault and battery in 2007 and cocaine possession with intent to distribute in 2006, according to the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office.

Because cash is hard to trace, EBT-funded bail payments could be widespread, Holmes said. “One of the arguments I’ve heard is we don’t know how much fraud and abuse there is. But that’s the problem — we don’t know because there’s no way to track it. When it comes to how much of this has happened in jail, there’s no way for us to know that.”

WTH...you can get cash from the ATM with those things? I thought they only worked at grocery stores...ya know...replaced the food stamps?

Wow. Apparently I should never have wasted my money and time by getting a degree and working full time jobs since I was 14. Damn my parents for instilling a work ethic!

I have to admit, when my fiance died we used the WiC program. Probably would have starved to death or lost our home without that program. Once a month we were given printed vouchers...each voucher was good for a certain type food item and quantity, and what dates they were good for...wasn't a full month...each voucher was only good for about a week at a time.

There was a strict list of what you could buy in the grocery stores; Milk, cheese, bread, 100% juice, certain cereals...the basics...there were no brownie vouchers. Above all, it had to be healthy and there was absolutely no way to redeem them for money. I also had to go in once a month and fill out employment paperwork...how many hours I worked and at what wage...didn't matter that I worked full time at a set wage...they required pay stubs to make sure the system wasn't getting bilked.

I don't have a problem with that Wolf those who need help to get back on there feet is one thing but to make a life style out of it is another story. I have known people who really could have used some welfare for a short time but couldn't get it because they were honest when filling out the paper work and were denied because they earned less then $100 a month over the cut off. Yet some people I've worked with that both of them worked a full time job and a part time job and still collected over $600 dollars a month in food stamp EBT card. Then they would sell it by offering $600 EBT in groceries for $400 cash or $200 cash for $300 EBT x 2 to people. And what got me they were both a pay grade above me and I made descent money.

Unbelievable. It's a government funded savings account. Essentially, we bailed this guy out.

I never want to sound cold hearted and evil about those in genuine need. I just question these days what we define as need. And it only gets worse when we lose sight of real needs with our poor answers to those ill defined needs. The minute we allowed government to take on the role of public assistance I think we slipped a big step. Family, church, and community suddenly were able to take a back seat to that role and go figure now we find you can take an EBT card and go on a cruise, gamble at the casino, and maybe even get bail money out from the ATM. I see no historical writings where we ever meant for government to take on this role, but having taken it on I see no clear evidence that we are better off for it despite the vast increase in size, authority, and taxation of our government. If anything, it seems to be a self perpetuating problem instead of a problem solving one. It is my opinion that we have long ago passed the point where government interferes more than it helps us. The current levels of responsibility seen around us day in and day out are the reason for that statement.

Excellent points. It is INDEED a self perpetuating problem with no effective means of oversight. Just another bureaucratic agency justifying its existence with an ill-defined set of rules for inclusion and exclusion with no one actually doing any evaluating with their brain. Every case needs to be reviewed by a human - educated in the process to spot and deal with abusers and compassionate enough to override a denial based on answers to a probably difficult to understand form.

Just another example of fraud and waste, our government throwing pearls before swine. The
Great Society of Lyndon Johnson has turned into a disaster of monumental proportions for
average hard working, tax paying citizens. Here are a few steps to cure this problem.
(I don't expect to see anything of the kind enacted soon)

1. Round up all of the illegal imigrants that can be found and deport them with no questions
asked.
2. End welfare for able bodied citizens who will not work.

3. Require a DNA test for every child born out of wedlock in the United States. Once the
the father, or sperm donor, is identified make him pay child support payments. If he
chooses not to, jail him until he does.

We have to remember this program is nothing but a ruse using the disabled as cover to
insure a solid Democratic voting bloc for years to come by buying their votes with taxpayer
money.

Actually the main reason most states have gone to EBT cards instead of paper vouchers was precisely because of abuse. Unscrupulous small retailers (your basic no-name convenience stores) were paying 50 cents cash on a $1 in food stamps, turning the stamps in and pocketing the difference. The "beneficiaries" were using the cash for smokes and beer. Of course they caught some of them, somebody finally wised up and started asking why a little Podunk store was turning in $3 million worth of food stamps a year. When they audited the guy he could only show where he had bought maybe $100,000 worth of product that year. Something doesn't add up......

I may sound indifferent to the plight of the down trodden but if the system keeps getting abused there will be NO SAFETY NET for those who TRUELY NEED it.

It never ceased to amaze me when I would inventory someones personal property after a drug arrest. I would usually find an EBT card, I'm paying for their food so they can buy drugs with their own money! I decided to retire early so I didn't have to continue to support so many of them. I used to say that I worked so that someone could sit on their front porch, I decided to be the one sitting on the front porch. The only difference is I worked for it and I don't need the governments help. I have no prolem helping those that need it, but I can't stand those that make it a lifestyle.

That right there folks is why we need to end welfare all together. The sooner and faster it's done the better.

Welfare and food aid is a safety net for the truly needy for a "leg up". I wouldn't want to live in a country that cannot or will not look out for those who would starve or have to live in a Maytag box.

That said, it cannot be a continual (for generations) gravy train. There has got to be check points to determine a person's progress for getting on their feet and becoming self sufficient and those serve as warning for the person to get their act together.

Tell me again why we cannot have drug testing for people on the dole? This should be done immediately.

Last Saturday on my way to the gun club I stopped at Starbucks, as I do every time. In the parking lot next to me was a brand new Lexus SUV. It was metallic gold/green. It had all the trim, wheels, leather, sun roof, etc. it was beautiful. The doors opened and out came a woman with three kids, all under the age of 4. When I saw these kids my first thought was man these kids are really well dressed, better than my grandkids for sure. All were wearing new or nearly new children's fashions all pressed and neat. The two little girls had their hair corn rowed like their mother, and the little boy was wearing a soccer style polo and slacks. The car was new, everything they wore was new, they looked like they were on their way to a high dollar country club for lunch. I followed them into Starbucks and the mother ordered three drinks and a chocolate milk. She whipped out an EBT card to pay for her order. Starbucks refused to accept the card. After she argued with the cashier a bit she reluctantly pulled a $50 bill from her purse and paid for her order. This kind of thing drives me crazy! I work my butt off and the government takes nearly 40% of what I make, and for what? So some welfare cheat can lead the good life? Apparently Obama is looking out for these folks because it didn't use to be this way.
