I bought a tracker 4 inch 44 mag for bear defense ( going fishing in alaska) I've been practicing with 44 spl and full power 240 gr magnum loads, and bought a box of 300gr full power loads but they are very rough on me and the gun , what does taurus say about running the heavy loads through the tracker? ,also bought some 310 gr coated bullets to reload , was going to load a little milder than heavy factory loads, around 950 fps, will that be powerful enough for brown bear.?

I really like my 44 Magnums, I have 5. But no Taurus. I think I would work up a load with a 265 gr cast Ranch Dog RNFP cast fairly hard (15-18 BHN), for shape and penetration . Leave expanding bullets for larger bore rifles. I too think 4" may be handy, but I'd prefer a 6" min. I don't know how a 44 Taurus would hold up to extra heavy magnum loads, but this gun/load wouldn't get much use (muzzle blast and recoil pretty heavy, not comfortable for 50-100 rounds per session!). I've never been in the company of a Grizzly bear, but have seen Oregon black bears. I think I would spend more effort on avoiding a Griz, or making sure I didn't surprise one...
