First Time Out With New G2

Although I'd gone shooting with friends now and then years ago, at 68 I recently picked up a PT11 G2 as my first handgun. I just had the opportunity to go to a little private range with the owner of the LGS I bought from and put the first 100 rounds thru it.

I thought it went pretty well, being the only shooter was good for the first time out, less distractions. From home defense range (5 yds?) left/right aim was decent, with vertical 8" or so low (possibly flinching?), certainly nothing that can't be corrected. Very pleased with the way the G2 feels in the hand and it ran well. Hadn't fired a handgun in 35-40 years so have nothing to compare with but I have no issues with trigger feel, when it's your only one it becomes your 'normal' one.

Still have to concentrate on things like muzzle discipline until they're ingrained but the session served its purpose, I feel I can now visit a public range, shoot safely, and enjoy the challenge of improving. I think the G2 was a good choice and will serve the purpose of home defense nicely.

Low could very well be flinching...anticipation of the trigger. With the really looong pull, especially if you have large hands its going to be really easy to pull this pistol low.

Congratulations on your new pistol. You can have someone load your mags and randomly put a snap cap in. That will tell you if you are flinching.

Congrats on the new pistol, I really like mine also. Some snap caps and trigger work while placing a coin on the slide can help smooth out the trigger pull...use the pad of the trigger finger and not the first joint. Shooting from a sandbag or similar rest can tell you if the sights are on target. Welcome from Northern Illinois!

I have put about 300 rounds thru mine with no problems. The only issue is that when the mag is empty the slide does not go back it stays closed as if there is another round in the chamber. Not the end of the world. I like it alot. $189.....

I appreciate the suggestions folks! :thumb:

I've been finding some very helpful videos on YouTube, I think one thing I'm going to do is look for a small jar of yellow/orange DayGlo paint and apply it to the front sight dot, I think it will draw my focus to the front sight more quickly.

It's still a problem that should be taken care of. It is supposed to hold open after the last round is fired - most likely a magazine issue.

MartinB26...I'll be 68 in a few months. Handguns/target shooting is one of my main activities. I have 2 G2's and they're a great value for a senior budget. Now get into reloading and you'll stretch that shooting budget further!

With some caveats...shooting just 9mm the payback is longer and lower. Excluding that caliber and going from .380 Auto on up to 44 Magnum the payback gets much better!!

Just an update: I'd read a number of helpful hints in this forum as well as watched a number of YT videos, as someone suggested I removed the slide and worked the trigger probably several hundred times, removed the firing pin assembly, cleaned the channel and lubed with dry film lubricant. After 250 rounds down the pipe and two good cleanings/lubings I have to say my G2 feels transformed, trigger action is far smoother than when new and overall it just feels more comfortable to shoot. My first handgun and at this point I'm very pleased.

After seeing some incredibly low prices for .22LR ammo I find myself thinking about a .22 pistol for target practice.

The G2 is great gun for the price. I have 2 of them, and I am 80.
