I actually found my way here from THR -- awesome forum!

I just bought my first handgun today -- a 461. Looking forward to taking it to the range. I actually had intended to buy a Ruger or a Smith today, but then I went in and picked this thing up and fell in love with the way it handles. I am hoping it will be a good gun that will last me a long time.

Yep just got my 971 and like it alot. My buddy has a much older Rossi pump .22LR in nickel and it has been a flawless firearm. Id like to talk him out of it. I also look foward to owning a few more of those FINE ROSSI's.

I don't either - does yours have an unfluted cylinder? And, is the barrel 4'' or 5'' ?

:) I have a Rossi M68-3" barrel... Love it...Small and heavy, the way a defensive weapon should be. Just got back from the range and I am pleased with the way it handled. Shoots a little high but it was smooth and steady. ;)

Just purchased a Rossi 972 357 magnum from academy here in houston for about $320 a few months ago. It's my first gun I ever owned. Hell I've never even handled a gun before. I got it for home defense purposes. I really wanted the snub nose version but they were out so I got the only one they had left. One thing though, Not knowing much about guns and ammo I bought 500 rounds of Federal 158 Grain 38 +P ammo, but it's all lead rounds, non-jacketed. How bad is that going to screw me up if I get in a self/home defense situation and I have to fire a bunch of rounds? I should have waited, saved some money, and bought the more expensive jacketed rounds but i can't afford to get new ammo now.

If you ran the 500 thru it, you might have a problem if you wanted to use 357 rds, but if you keep the cylinders cleaned out of any deposit made by the shorter 38's you should be OK. +p in a 357, in 38, should not be major problem, except for cleaning after shooting.

I shoot 158 gr FMJ 38's in mine, and even have the same in 357 for HD work.

Rossi owner here. I have .38 I bought years ago for like 169$. It doesn't seem to have a model number on it. I enjoy shooting it occasionaly I have only shot about 500 rounds through it, if that.

None screwed up by buying the 158 LSWCHP. That is still the number 1 load for defense even if it's old hat technology. Point is the 158 lead semi-wadcutter hollowpoint is still king of the hill as far as real world street track records go for stopping attackers.

Sources are the recent police/tactical journals, magazines, and other periodicals.
Documented self defense shootings show this to be true.

Buffalo Bore,Remington, Federal, and Winchester makes of this round are all excellent picks.
Remingtons' lead is a bit softer than the other brands excepting Buffalo Bore's product) and expands or deforms more easily.

These loads all work well out of even 2 inch barreled snub revolvers. There's no metal jacket to have to peel back retarding the expansion.

The first guy ever shot with the 158 LSWCHP weighed 300 lbs. and dropped instantly when he was hit square in the body with it.

Since the +P load is still the yardstick by which .38 Special rounds are judged why go with anything else unless circumstances dictate otherwise?

The only other round that equals, but does not surpass the 158gr. LSWCHP, is the Speer 135gr. JHP in +P guise.

Since the Speer load has less mass, recoil, and perceived muzzle flip there is good reason to go with that for use in snubs or full sized revolvers.

Everything else takes a very close 2nd place finish. That is in in +P guise.

I got a Rossi 38 sunb 5 shot in Feb. 09. Shoots great, looks good, does what I wanted a snub nose to do, also feels good in the hand. I rented six other 2" snubs before buying. The Rossi shoots as good as any of them. Very happy with the purchase. I do have to admit that I hit much better with my Taurus 4" 357.

Hey Snubbie 41, I have a question for you. I bought a
Rossi 38 snub 2" barrel, blue, in Dec. 08. I have looked many places on the gun and cannot figure out the model number. Any ideas? It's a sweet shooting gun, I am just a little confused as to mod. #
Thanks

I bought a Rossi 2" 38 special. It is a very good little gun. It is the first snub nose I've owned and shooting it was a surpirze. I have only shot 38 wadcutters through it and I was amazed at the recoil from the little gun! The same rounds going through my 4" Taurus 357 feel like shooting 22LRs, but through the 2" Rossi they fell like much more powerful rounds. It's interesting the difference that a 2" barrel makes. Anyone have thoughts on what ammo I should be trying out in the snub nose?
Thanks

Gold Dot makes a load that is specifically designed for being shot out of snubs. I think it's the 125 grain +P GDHP. It's probably a bit stouter recoil load than what you've been shooting through it, but in a self defense situation, you'll likely not even notice it.
