With all these old Model 82s kicking around gun shows, the dating problem on the old 82s just keep coming up. I assumed that the "82" in Model 82 referred to 1982, the year they started making them. Now, people more intelligent than I said that these guns were made as far back as 1971. So, what I would like to know is what is the earliest known manufacturing date of a Model 82? It seems that when Taurus took over the Beretta factory in 1980, their numbering system for both their models and their serial numbers changed. My old '82 has a six digit number starting at 512xxx. I think maybe if we had some actual dates for the six digit numbers like 6xx for 7xx or 8xx, we could ballpark the numbers for people. What is the highest serial number anyone out there has and what is the lowest?

I've attached a pic of my old beater.
