Here's my cell number, call me so I can rob you

'NO ONE COULD MAKE THIS UP' | Police waited at shop for suspect to return, shot him

March 26, 2008Recommend (20)

BY LISA DONOVAN Staff Reporter
He may be charged with trying to rob a West Side muffler shop this week, but no one can accuse 18-year-old Ruben Zarate, who lives near the scene of the crime, of plotting the heist of the century.

His downfall? Handing over his cell phone number to his victims, Chicago Police say.

See, on the first robbery attempt Monday morning at the Mufflers For Less, in the 2600 block of North Laramie, there was no money in the shop's register, employees told the gun-wielding robber. And the safe, well, only the manager had access to it and the manager wasn't going to be in until later.

So, the thief offered up his cell phone number and told at least one employee to give him a ring when the boss got in.

Well, the would-be thief got that second call and returned around noon. He walked in with his gun and, according to police reports, pointed it at a 25th Police District Tactical Officer, who normally works in plainclothes. The officer told the man he was a police officer, but the suspect apparently didn't drop the gun. The officer then fired twice, striking the would-be thief, later identified as Zarate, in the leg. He survived the injury but remained hospitalized at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center on Tuesday night.

Zarate, of the 5100 block of West Schubert, was charged with three counts of attempted armed robbery and one count of aggravated assault to a police officer, the latter for allegedly pointing a gun at the officer, said the Cook County state's attorney's office.

''No one could make this up,'' 25th Police District Lt. Scott Schwieger said.

Still, the chuckle over the cell phone number is tempered by the dangers posed in the arrest.

''We know he's armed and we know he's coming back,'' Schwieger said.

Ind. man accused of shooting himself to impress friends, family

An Indiana man is accused of shooting himself in order to prove his claims that he belonged to a gang, police say.

Zachary Booso, 19, reported to police that an unidentified man shot him with a homemade weapon during a robbery Saturday in Brownsburg, Ind.

But "suspicions arose surrounding Booso’s story when he told investigators that the shooter was 5 to 10 feet away, but then later claimed that the shot to his cheek had first entered his mouth," the Hendricks County Flyer reports on its website.

Police in the Indianapolis suburb say Booso, a member of the U.S. Navy, acknowledged that he had staged the incident with a pellet gun to impress his friends and family.

"Nobody believed him, so this was going to … show all of them that he had been involved in a gang," Brownsburg police Capt. Jeff Gray tells WRTV-TV.

Favorites are the ones who went down the cooking vents at the local restaurants to break in. Problems in both cases were the deep fryers were going because off duty employees were cooking themselves fries.
Deep fried the crooks to a nice crackly crunch when they fell into the fryers.

Gotta sell the sizzle.

Tanning beds are least safer.

In Hampton ,Viiginia cops chased a bank robber for over 5 to 6 miles on foot. Fresh officers would take up the chase in groups, in pitch dark no less, and ran the guy to earth. Panting, heaving, totally exhausted and wheezing, or hero asked how the police could follow him that far that long.

He was then told about the beacons his running shoes were. Flashing red light in one and flashing red in the other when one takes a step. DOOOOHHH!! Yes, his over a hundred dollar shoes had flashing strobe lights in the back of each shoe.
