I have a few friends that are on the force. Through casual conversation, a couple have related to me that they actually feel better about a stop when the person has a handgun permit (this is in Texas). It lets them know the person (most likely) isn't wanted, a fugitive, or commited a felony.

Depends on what your state laws are.

The question about guns, permits and what to when pulled over was talked about in the handgun safety course I took. Class was held by active duty police officer with the help of another LEO and a retired LEO. Around here, Delaware, you aren't required to hand over CCDW license or inform officer of gun. Matter of fact he said saying something like 'I've got a gun' would put officer in high alert and wouldn't help the situation. I asked him 'when should you inform officer?' and the concensus of all three LEO's was if asked to step out of car to inform them 'I have a license for CCDW and I'm carrying, how would you like to proceed?'

Different states have different laws. Know the laws of the state you're in and obey those laws.

You know almost every time I see someone in a video, or training scenario, they say the proper way would be to inform, either when you hand the Drivers License over, and most especially if asked to get out, "'I have a CCDW and I'm carrying, how would you like to proceed?

Here is another possible scene, If I do or do not have my ccw, but I am in compliance with the law, and have my gun in the glove compartment or a 2nd gun in there. The officer asks for my Ins card, and Registration. (what should be my next move?? or comment to him??) It is in the glove box with the gun?

If the gun is in the glove compartment along with the registration or insurance card you should let the officer know before reaching for it. Could be taken the wrong way if gun becomes visible to LEO while retrieving papers. Same for open carry when the gun is on the seat of the car. But handing over CCDW license with drivers license is part of states written laws. Not required here. Not sure if computers in police cars puts up that information before officer approaches. :???:

Now that is why I like you, good advice that is sure to get me blown away!! No chance to explain or anything!

First thing I was told, is never ever use the word GUN!! Even Weapon could be bad choice!

So Ok, how do I advise him carefully to avoid any confusion? And so he does not get nervous with me.

Oh and by the way, I do on occasion carry THE JUDGE on the seat, because it is too darn big for any glovebox on any vehicle I have.

Keep your registration and insurance card on your person this way you don't have to open your glove compartment. I know when I pull someone over that seems a little shady my trigger finger gets itchy when they reach to open the glovebox.

Now finally a good answer, but do I have room in my wallet for Registrations and Ins. card for 7 vehicles that I might be driving. Actually, that is the only scenario that I worry about. I know I am not gonna do anything, but the poor guy standing behind my front window post looking over my shoulder might have a finger just like yours.

Ok, here is my planned answer unless someone comes up with a better one. You guys are not a lot of help, but make me very nervous !!

"Officer, There is one of my firearms in the glovebox, where the registration and Ins. card are. How would you like to proceed! "

Have you thought about getting one of those visor pouches/pockets/CD holders and keeping your vehicles paperwork in there?

Or, don't keep a weapon in the glove box?

Okay, so I have been pulled over a couple of times. I have always gotten my insurance & license out before anyone even got to my window. However, I don't have to dig for anything......I keep my insurance card against the glove box door, so I always know where it is located.

Since I have had my concealed carry license, I have only been pulled over once. It was at night, he was fishing for drunks. I had my insurance, drivers license and concealed carry license ready for him when he got to my window. He asked if I was carrying, I responded in the affirmative. He asked where it was, I told him, and he told me that he was going to hold my pistol during the stop (and that he would return it upon completion of the stop). He told me my license plate light was out, which is why he stopped me. We talked briefly, he told me that I should get it fixed. I said that I would. After that, he returned the pistol to where I had kept it and told me and the wife to have a nice night. He was friendly, courteous, and very professional. Oh, I did fix the light.

Good thought there! Will look into that Idea!

Even though I always hated those things for some reason. When I pulled down the visor stuff went all over the place. :-\

Not an option in this state, if you do not have your CCW, and I will still be without that until at least sometime in April. Open carry, or glove box, NO consoles. I try to have a holster on the gun, so like some states require two steps to access your gun. KY does not require that but seemed like a good idea to me.
