Went into hospital on February 29. First procedure was a cardiac catheterization. That went well (I guess) so on March 2 they did the open heart surgery.
My mitral valve was replaced with a valve from a pig (Spare me the cheap jokes, please) and I had a double bypass to replace two clogged arteries.
I did have a bit of trouble following the operation: When they replaced the breathing tube with a C-Pap mask, that was more than I could take. That mask delivers a wind into your face that is continual and almost at gale force; the result was that my nose was completely stopped up and my mouth and throat so dry I could barely make myself understood.
Finally I did get the attendants' attention and asked that the breathing tube be put back in (so long as they could knock me out before doing it) (and not knowing until a few days later that such a re-insertion is rarely successful).
It was successful in my case or I probably wouldn't be writing this.
(About the operation as a whole: the pulmonary specialist wanted to wait six months until my lungs could be made stronger; the cardiac specialist overruled him, believing that in six months my heart would be too weak to withstand an operation.)

The rest of my time in the hospital was spent doing the usual things: trying to get some uninterrupted sleep but instead being wakened every couple of hours so someone could test something or other. Oh, yeah - a bit of physical therapy, too: which mostly consisted of walking up and down the hall (with a walker) while a nurse followed along and held my hospital gown closed.

Got released on the 15th of March and spent the next nine days staying with my son and his family. Finally, today, I decided it was time to see whether I can function on my own so I asked Mike to bring me home. I don't plan on doing any driving for a few days - and even then it will be very short trips to the bank or to a place where I can buy refills for my electronic cigarette.
A lady who lives in my apartment building has agreed to use my car (if my insurance covers her) to bring me things from the grocery store, so I should be pretty well set in that regard.

Anyway, that's my story and although there is still some pain and some limitations on what I can do, I think I'm doing well.
Thanks to all those who offered prayers and good wishes.

Erv, good to have you back, and see you doing well. Feeling bad sure isn't any fun, however I suspect you will be feeling better than you have in years. Good luck with the recovery.

I went through the same procedure Sept 28, 2010 except I had two valves replaced. After a long rehab, I went back to work at a psysically challenging job. I stayed a year and retired. Excersize as much as you can. I walk several miles every day. It's a long road. I still have my days. You can make it!!!! Glad you're back!

Here's hoping you have a speedy recovery, Erv! You've been missed.

If you ever have occasion to use a CPAP again, they make them with a vapor attachment that blows warm moist air. Surprised they didn't do that for you. Been using one for years and hate sleeping w/o it.

Hey Erv, it's good to see you back! That sounds like a heck of an ordeal and I hope and pray that you're on the easier part now. I was just diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea last week and and I'm trying to adjust to the CPAP machine. The first two nights it felt like I was suffocating and it went bye bye in the middle of the night. It is getting better and I know that I have to get accustomed to it as the result of not getting full and restorative sleep is heart attack and stroke. With those options, the mask seems like a minor inconvenience.

Take care of yourself and do your therapy, but don't overdo it for a while.
