CASE CLOSED: Head of commission investigating Parkland shooting says armed staffer could have stopped Nikolas Cruz

I say allegedly because I don't know this source and the 6 round magazine quote sounds strange

Via Miami-based Patricia Mazzei, New York Times, quoting Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri who is heading the commission investigating the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland, Fla.

Nikolas Cruz had to reload “several times”:
Sheriff Bob Gualtieri of Pinellas County, head of Florida's state-appointed commission investigating the Parkland shooting, said today that video from inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School showed the gunman, Nikolas Cruz, had to reload his AR-15 assault rifle several times.
– Patricia Mazzei (@PatriciaMazzei) August 9, 2018
According to Sheriff Gualtieri, the rifle only had a 6-shot magazine (17 were killed and 17 more wounded in the attack):
"There were several other times when he was in that school that his gun was empty," the sheriff said, noting that the rifle had a six-round magazine. A reload break allowed a teacher on the third floor of the freshman building to move students away to safety, he said.

"If he had somebody in there with a gun, they could have mitigated this," the sheriff said. "There were opportunities for staff to have intervened if they had been armed."

I think the school would have been better served with an armed and trained staffer with skin in the game than a Broward deputy in a 'rocking chair' job.

6 round magazine is a gun ignorant individual being told the gun had 6 rounds in it, not knowing that meant the 5 round magazine and the one in the chamber and mis-identifying it as a 6 round magazine
There's been many reports that he had multiple 10 round magazines. He didn't get larger ones because they didn't fit in his backpack.

There's the solution to the mass shooting problem right there......limit the size of back packs and pockets.

School Resource Officer is probably not a job for the "best and brightest" in the department.
I expect it is an armchair job for those close to retirement. Worst they expect to have to deal
with is a student fight or someone found with drugs.

Actually, at MSD, they are making the kids carry clear, see through backpacks. The kids are not happy and feel this infringes on their rights.

The libs do everything "feel good". No action plans whatsoever.

Either that or a dumping ground for the incompetent who are more trouble to fire than it's worth.

No, the 'coward cringing outside' was the Broward deputy.

Local school district is heavy on retired military. The middle school where my grandkids went had about 15% retired military on the faculty, about half of whom had seen the elephant.

The 'armed and trained' staffer is most likely already inside where the action is -- as I said, skin in the game -- not on the outside and counting on them going into a hot zone.

Besides, having known a few in the teaching profession, I'd put money on teachers taking it to the gunman if they had what they needed. Consider the teacher at Sandy Hook who died in place, trying to shield her students.

You don't hear about this happening in Israel.

well I guess its how you look at it?
see I immediately thought Ok lets out law 10 round mags and only allow 30-40-50 round magazines to be legal then you can't hide them anywhere!
course I thought issuing everyone a single shot handgun when boarding an airplane was the way to go to prevent hijackings instead of all the searching.

Tomorrow’s forecast calls for widespread light followed by patches of darkness. - George Carlin as Hippy Dippy the weatherman.

I didn’t even know they actually sold 5 round mags . . . . When I was a kid, my dad gave me a bolt action 410G shotgun with a 5 round box magazine. He milled down a steel bar to put in the mag as a blank to convert the mag capacity to only 4 rounds since the legal ammo capacity was only 5 rounds in a firearm at the time. I thought the steel blank was the follower . . . . until I grew up and realized what was going on. I removed the blank so it holds its full compliment of 5+1 now.

Say, that is a great idea for airport security. If everybody would wear see through clothes while traveling just think how fast the TSA lines would move.

Some states (Florida is one) limit the mag capacity for hunting certain game.

My luck, I'd be going through screening at the same time as Hillary or Whoopi.

There is a lot to be learned from Isreal there is not a thing wrong with the picture that JHP230 posted I like the fact that it is out where people know that they stand a chance of getting killed. It don't have to be out in the open for all to see but it should be on their person. The teacher at Sandy hook that got killed protecting her kids she had the guts to stand between the gunman and her kids had she been trained and armed it very possibly could have ended there but imagine a dozen or more like her bearing down on the shooter. It might not stop it completely but it would definitely slow it down. My God give these people a chance to defend themselves and the kids they re just targets the way it stands now. Take the cops off of Capital Hill and put them in schools
