College student shoots home invader, saves 10 lives

College student shoots home invader, saves 10 lives

Yet another reason to keep a gun in the house . . .

Several months ago, in the notoriously dangerous neighborhood of College Park in Atlanta, Georgia, two armed criminals broke into a house party of students.

After confiscating the group's valuables, the invaders split the men and women up into different rooms.

Witnesses say the perpetrators then counted their rounds and discussed if they had "enough" ammunition.

The students believe the gunmen were going to rape and murder the entire group of students, who were celebrating a birthday at the end of the semester.

However, one male student, whose identity is being protected by police and local media, retrieved a handgun from his backpack and fired at the thug who was detaining the men.

(That is: One smart student had prepared for a night in College Park, Atlanta.)

The criminal fled the apartment under the threat of injury and never returned.

The student, continuing on into the girls' room, found the other thug, 23-year-old Calvin Lavant, preparing to rape his first victim.

The student exchanged gunfire with Lavant, lethally wounding him in the process. Lavant fled through a window and died in front of his apartment, only one building away.

One of the female students was injured during the exchange, but doctors expect a full and complete recovery.

So what's the point

A student saved the girls from rape, and saved the whole group of 10 people (including himself) from murder . . . and he did it with a handgun.

This is a perfect example of how ludicrous "big city gun laws" are. What if this had happened in New York, Chicago, or any of the other big cities that criminalize their citizens' self defense?

Yes, we would be reading an entirely different story -- one so horrendous that we would shudder at the very words.

Either this whole group of friends would have been raped and murdered by these two sorry excuses for human beings . . . or the hero of this story would be facing prison time for firearm possession and murder.

Thankfully, however, Atlanta hasn't outlawed self-defense yet. And since someone had a gun and was willing to use it, innocent life was preserved.

Congratulations to the unnamed hero of this story. You saved your friends' lives.

Isn't a dorm considered part of the school? I thought this story was inspiring and thought stimulating. Good stuff going on here. Your thoughts?

I'm happy that the college students came out of this with their lives intact!

I read apartment and not dorm. I assumed this wasn't part of the campus. This is exactly why we need people to step up and protect themselves. If you refuse to be a victim, the chances are you won't be.

Cheers.

What the media printing something positive about guns, no it can't be.

It sure did not go further then local thats for sure.

And I would not go to parts of Atlanta without a fully auto M-16 and a couple of Claymores. In other words I would not go!!!!!!

Great point. The American Rifleman has a section called "
The Armed Citizen" that has storys of regular people in irregular situations. The bad guys come out on the short end of the stick if the good guys have ....well lets just say.

To clarify, College Park is not part of the Ga Tech campus.

I well remember this incident as well as numeorus others on the GT campus. 2009 was a virtual open range on the Tech campus, though, where, unfortunately, the no guns on campus, came into play with numerous drive by shootings and armed muggings occurring on and just adjacent to the campus proper. I got a kid who wants to go to transfer to tech within the next year. Horrible on campus safety record. Maybe I can talk him into commuting (we're only 40 minutes west of the ATL campus).

We have the same thing near our Collages in TN its drive by city. Crime is up a bunch lately and the law has no clue. The worse are TN State and MTSU a lot of rapes and shootings. They had a home invasion at one of the best Christian Collages in Nashville not that long ago.

I wouldn't call College Park "notoriously dangerous". It might not be Beverly Hills but there are many nice, family neighborhoods there. I almost bought a house there several years back when I thought I was going to take a job in DT Atlanta.

Really? I lived 1.5 miles from the TTU main campus in Cookeville for years, never saw anything like this. I could see it happening in Memphis though.
