Video captures gun falling from judge?s jacket at courthouse. Now he?s charged. - Chicago Tribune

I wonder how many people have ever gone through his court on just a concealed weapons charge and gotten a sentence from him.

They make really good holsters for pocket carry, so that a gun won't merely just fall out of a pocket. I can literally hold mine upside down and shake it, and the gun won't fall out, but it will easily come out when I pull it out. Not that I'd be carrying something that I wasn't allowed to carry anyway but still.

A veteran Cook County judge was hit with a misdemeanor gun charge after sheriff’s deputies saw him drop a pistol last week in the lobby of the county’s main criminal courthouse, authorities said.

Judge Joseph Claps, who has presided over felony criminal cases at the Leighton Criminal Court Building, was reassigned last week to “nonjudicial duties” pending a meeting Wednesday of the circuit court’s executive committee, a spokesman for Chief Judge Timothy Evans’ office said.

Claps was walking in the lobby of the courthouse at 26th Street and California Avenue on July 3 when two deputies noticed a handgun fall out of a jacket draped over the judge’s arm, according to a sheriff’s incident report.

Security cameras captured the gun tumbling out of Claps’ jacket as well as the judge picking up the silver pistol and putting it in his pants pocket, the report said.

Claps has a firearm owner’s identification card and a concealed carry license, Smith said, but weapons are prohibited in the courthouse for even concealed carry holders.
Claps, 70, has been a judge for more than two decades, the last 15 years with the Criminal Division. He previously worked as the top assistant to the state attorney general and as a Cook County prosecutor.

Unfortunately many people in the criminal justice system feel that they can uphold the law but don't have to abide by the law. Laws are made for the unwashed masses not for the elite chosen few.

I thought judges were allowed to carry in their own court!?? In fact, you have to get permission from a judge to carry in their court.

Maybe you can only carry between your chambers and your courtroom? And not on the general grounds of the courthouse?

The key phrase to remember is: "Do as we say! Not as we do!"

Obviously the Liberals in Illinois don't believe a Judge presiding over a felony court in Cook County is responsible enough to carry a firearm in their own courtroom.

Very sloppy carry practice. Can't say that I blame him for carrying in the courtroom, though. I wonder How many times he's been threatened by two bit hoods that he's sentenced.

As I recall reading some time ago, Judges, officers of the court and police are exempt from the prohibition of carrying inside a court house under Illinois law. That is fairly standard procedure around the country. I guess this shows the judges are nothing special when it comes to firearm handling. In fact, I dare say that most of the civilians probably know more about securing their arms than most police, judges and officers of the court.

What truly burns my butt about stories like this, and the dancing FBI fool, and the mother with a loose gun in a purse in the back seat with her kid, and so many many more is, that they reinforce the idea in many minds that even law abiding citizens aren't responsible enough to own and carry firearms. When something like this happens, it doesn't just hurt the idiot or the innocent victim if there is one, but every single one of us who wish to uphold and preserve the 2A. It's not enough to just be a law abiding gun owning citizen, but you also need to be a safe and responsible one. It's not the anti's who deserve our ire, but people like this who reflect poorly on the lot of us.

I am sure they had to make some gesture about enforcing the law since it was on video in front of many witnesses. But behind closed doors, wink, wink, nudge nudge, it will be quietly handled.
Other than questionable judgement for carrying without a holster, he had a carry license and he is an officer of the court, just like the other guards. Lawyers have told me that most judges now carry, just because the level of violence of those coming before them is much higher than in the past.

What is this firearms license? Does Illinois really force people to have a license to use their constitutional rights? If so, why then aren't reporters required to have a license to work? Do you need a license in Illinois to protect you from unlawful search and seizure? I can see it now, the police kick you door down, only to have you confront them with your license to force them to get a warrant. Oh well, I guest that is what you get when you let so many dead people vote.

Do as I say not as I do? Wait...This is Chicago and no one needs a gun? There are laws that protect us not guns! ;)

The article is referencing a FOID card. Firearm Owner Identification card. You have to have one of these BEFORE you can make any purchases (firearm) in Illinois. You have to have a separate permit to actually carry a firearm.

They have something similar in N Carolina whereby you have to be “OK’d” somehow in order to be legal to buy a firearm. I’ll defer details to any N Carolinians who chime in.

ahh, if you are a Klutz then you are klutz , and careless with a deadly instrument!
that being said I am not sure how much latitude a Judge has in abiding with law in his courtroom?
I think they can allow a pretty wide disgretion in most cases of what happens in the court room?
I am generally not for any restrictions upon gun carry but at least they are consistent.

Goes to show that in Chicago, even the Judges are not that high up in the hierarchy as the elites have that city totally under their thumb.

Imagine the Judges surprise when he finds out his handlers that tell him how to rule on cases are nowhere to be found when he needs support.

I will totally support this Judges right to carry when the law also supports mine equally.

So this is like to identify those people in Chicago who are likely to support 2A? Neat, they can sort you all out for elimination, or reeducation camps quickly. And NC, really, I have to be "OK'd" to exercise my guaranteed Constitutional right? I mean, I understand, "they" just want to decide who can exercise the constitutional rights. I mean, it isn't really like NC's poll tax scheme to keep minorities from voting. Really, it is the "they" that are doing the deciding that bothers me. Seems just so Peter Strzok'ish.

BTW, I am looking forward to Ms Page's testimony, I wonder if she will cry? Many people were upset with Louie Gomertz asking Strzok about lying to his wife while having a raging affair with Ms. Page. I just thought he should have brought it home that he was pointing out that Strzok was an accomplished liar, who was comfortable with maintaining a lie without giving anything away on a daily basis. That is not an easy thing to do and actually points to a level of psychosis where they lack empathy, or any inner emotions. They are able to act out, but really feel nothing inside. You pretty much would have to be that way to carry out such a daily lie.

Seems to me the most fair thing for Chicago politicians to do is allow open carry/ conceal carry with no type of permission required at all.
I mean at least give the law abiding targets an even fighting chance with the bad guys that don't care about what the law says.
