Beaumont's pistol-packing pastor is in the early stages of trying to get a deal for a new reality series, after his story made headlines.
The Rev. James McAbee, 36, of Lighthouse Worship Center in Beaumont earned the moniker "pistol packing pastor" when he became a qualified Texas concealed handgun instructor last year. McAbee tells a story of his days in prison as a young man, and later when he found Christ and became a pastor.
McAbee said several production companies have approached him about doing a reality show about his life since he gained some media attention. Another expressed interest in a movie about his life, he said. "I feel pretty good that it's something that could really happen," he said.
The process is in the early stages and is not a guarantee. He picked one of the companies that approached him and signed a talent agreement with a productioncompany, which is pitching the show to major
networks. McAbee said he is bound by contract not to say which company.
He said cameras might follow him around and show what he does as a pastor and how he teaches on the gun range.
At his church in 2011, two men tried to rob McAbee with 2-by-4 boards at his church. He held them at gunpoint and the men were arrested.
McAbee owns 20-plus weapons and is a Texas concealed handgun instructor. In the aftermath of recent school shootings nationwide, he began providing free handgun training to 300 Beaumont-area teachers.
His arsenal includes handguns, shotguns, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and even a Red Rider BB gun. He keeps the weapons locked in a gun safe, away from his three children, ages 11, 6 and 1-1/2.
He said he understands why his story is getting attention.
"I am a pastor and a concealed handgun instructor. That's pretty weird," he said.
